I just had a mental breakdown at my OB/GYN!

Original post by matron

I decided to go to my OB/GYN for my annual (which is forever late) even though I had AF because I have been dying to talk to her about my infertility problems and it's impossible to get an appt with her. So I go in, pee in the cup like I'm supposed to, hand it to the nurse, tell her I'm there just to talk because I got AF, and she says, 'Ok, in that case, I'll throw your urine away.' And I'm like, 'Won't she need it to run tests of any sort?' And the nurse says no.

While I'm waiting for the doc, I hear the woman next door talking loudly about how excited she is that she's pregnant, and talking about her ultrasound, and for some reason I start bawling, uncontrollably, and I'm not a cryer. In comes the doctor and she basically tells me that there's nothing wrong with me (how do you know??) and that if anything, there's probably something wrong with DH. She writes a prescrip for a semen analysis and sees how upset I am. I tell her about my family history of infertility and how I'm concerned bc I've been trying since Jan 04 and she goes, 'well, if it makes you feel better I'll write you a prescrip for an hsg and tsh also, but i guarantee you you'll get pregnant right after you get the test done just like everyone else.' I tell her I experience pain during intercourse and during pelvic exams and she says, 'ok, well then do u want a sonogram too? I don't suggest it bc you really can't find much from that...' and i'm like, 'well, you're the doctor, you tell me. if you think i'm being ridic, then i won't waste my time, energy, or money.' And she says, 'Yeah, don't do it.' I'm like, 'What about my thyroid, don't you want to take blood or anything?' And she's like, 'I doubt you have a thyroid prob bc your pds are regular.' I'm like, 'But they're not. They range anywhere bt 24 - 32 days -- I never know. And in prior years, I've skipped months!' I'm crying still, BTW. So, she gives me my prescrips and off I go. I'm going back for my pap in two weeks and she's like, 'we won't have any results by then, but i'll call u when we get the results.' thaaanks.

Wow I just saw this!

I cannot say it any better than any of the other ladies did, but honestly your doctor is just the epitome of BAD, (IMO) and for something as important and personal as your plans to TTC and all the anxieties that go along with it - and this is definitely NOT the type of medical professional you want when you DO conceive and eventually have a child!

Good Luck , noone deserves to be treated like that

I'm soooo sorry you had to go through that experience. I agree with everyone else-- go see an RE! OBGYNs are good at dealing with you once you're pregnant, but an RE will focus on GETTING you pregnant... that's their business! You'll feel a million times better once you start seeing an RE, they kick off all the testing and formulate a plan of action right away!!!

Matron, so sorry! Definitely seek another doctor who will EMPATHIZE with what you are going through.

Def. find another dr - when you do get pregnant I don't think this is the dr you want delivering your child...

Re: I just had a mental breakdown at my OB/GYN!

I cannot begin to express how much all of your kind words and advice mean to me. I know my emotions (with the crying and all) were a little irrational (when I walked out my DH thought I got diagnosed with cancer) but I've been with DH since 98, and we've wanted a baby since day 1, so this is very hard for me.

I loved my OB/GYN last year (which was the first year I saw her) because she spent the time to discuss a lot of issues with me, which many of my past doctors had not. She actually studied under a RE too, which was a definite plus for me. I know I was taking everything she was saying way too emotionally bc of my frame of mind, but in the same respect, I didn't feel I should have had to keep explaining myself. I felt as though she didn't know enough about me or my history to be telling me that I'm ok. I feel as though she should have asked more questions rathar than having me say, 'but' all the time. (like, 'but my pds are irregular, but you should ck my bloodwork, but my family hisory, etc.'

I feel she was great in that she was willing to do WHATEVER I wanted, and definitely gave me the idea that she knew that I knew what I was talking about. (like she said, 'I'm sure through all of your research you learned about ...' She was willing to take as drastic of a measure as I was willing to take, but I think the reason she was being 'lax' about it is because I never had an irregular pap or an STD, I've tested 'positive' on the OPKs which means I HAVE ovulated before (doesn't necessarily mean I am every month but whatever), and she said MOST times the problem lies with the men, and it's such an unobtrusive test for them, that it's not worth going through a series of obtrusive tests until you get the semen analysis results. She told me that she knows it's frustrating, but given my history (what little she knows) she doesn't think there's much to worry about, unless there's a prob with my DH's semen. She also said she'd take it from there once the results are in and do further testing (blood and such) at THAT point. So she IS willing, and she WAS being friendly -- I just felt like I wanted her to do something and I felt like I shouldn't have had to ask for it, or made to feel embarrassed for wanting to have it done.

With all of that said, I will likely change docs not only bc of this, but bc it's a hike to get to her now that I've moved anyway, and this is not the only time she's upset me. The last time I got examined by her (last year), I was in so much pain after the exam that I was literally rolled up in a ball on my LR floor rocking back and forth in tears for like 8 hours! I told her during the exam that I experienced pain, and she said that it was normal. I literally almost fainted.

In a sick kind of way, I almost HOPE there's something wrong with me, so they can just FIX it.

So ... my next questions are ....

1. Can you pls recommend another OB/GYN in the Nesconset/Smithtown/Stony Brook area?

2. Can you pls recommend a RE in this area? I have two that I'll prob use, but other recs are welcome.

3. Can someone PLEASE tell me where to go for teh semen analysis, TSH, and HSG in this area? I asked at the office in Oakdale but they were clueless.

Sorry so long ,and TIA for more advice/recs! I love you guys!

I love my OB/GYN. He is in East Setuaket and has been great with me. He answers any questions I might have and went so far as to give me his private line because I had trouble getting an appointment. What impressed me the most about him...he actually listens to what you say and can remember it for the next time he sees you. FM if you want info.

Subbing was ok. I loved the third grade class at Dogwood. Kindergarten at Nesconset left much to be desired though. These children were no students of kelly4, let's just put it that way. It was a zoo!

Re: I just had a mental breakdown at my OB/GYN!

Reproductive Specialists....Dr. Maria Saketos, has an office in Stony Brook and in .....Mineola (Old Country Road)....she is an RE....it's an infertility clinic.

Been going for two months, mostly just had to go through many tests.....

I can't swear by them because I am still TTC ....however, I did feel really comfortable with Dr. Saketos. I had gone to an RE in manhattan, only once, and he didn't compare to Dr. Saketos whatsoever.

Also if any ladies...need another reference....I received a really excellent one.....a girl from fertility friend and I were talking, and her boss is a big real estate developer/the owner of the mets.....and he gave her the name of a 'top RE'. He is associated with cornell and located in Manhattan. She said he takes insurance....so.....if by the summer I don't have a BFP....he is who I am going to. I figured, if the guy owns the mets.....he should have pretty good connections :)
