I just had a mental breakdown at my OB/GYN!

I just had a mental breakdown at my OB/GYN!

I decided to go to my OB/GYN for my annual (which is forever late) even though I had AF because I have been dying to talk to her about my infertility problems and it's impossible to get an appt with her. So I go in, pee in the cup like I'm supposed to, hand it to the nurse, tell her I'm there just to talk because I got AF, and she says, 'Ok, in that case, I'll throw your urine away.' And I'm like, 'Won't she need it to run tests of any sort?' And the nurse says no.

While I'm waiting for the doc, I hear the woman next door talking loudly about how excited she is that she's pregnant, and talking about her ultrasound, and for some reason I start bawling, uncontrollably, and I'm not a cryer. In comes the doctor and she basically tells me that there's nothing wrong with me (how do you know??) and that if anything, there's probably something wrong with DH. She writes a prescrip for a semen analysis and sees how upset I am. I tell her about my family history of infertility and how I'm concerned bc I've been trying since Jan 04 and she goes, 'well, if it makes you feel better I'll write you a prescrip for an hsg and tsh also, but i guarantee you you'll get pregnant right after you get the test done just like everyone else.' I tell her I experience pain during intercourse and during pelvic exams and she says, 'ok, well then do u want a sonogram too? I don't suggest it bc you really can't find much from that...' and i'm like, 'well, you're the doctor, you tell me. if you think i'm being ridic, then i won't waste my time, energy, or money.' And she says, 'Yeah, don't do it.' I'm like, 'What about my thyroid, don't you want to take blood or anything?' And she's like, 'I doubt you have a thyroid prob bc your pds are regular.' I'm like, 'But they're not. They range anywhere bt 24 - 32 days -- I never know. And in prior years, I've skipped months!' I'm crying still, BTW. So, she gives me my prescrips and off I go. I'm going back for my pap in two weeks and she's like, 'we won't have any results by then, but i'll call u when we get the results.' thaaanks.

WOW!
I don't want to sound harsh but....

GET A NEW DR! One who cares about her patients and one who knows more about fertility. I would even go as far as to say, if you can, go to a RE instead of an OBGYN

Find a new Dr! When my Gyno was not aggressive enough I left and went to an RE.

Good Luck!

I agree. That is a terrible appointment. I was upset at my last prenatal appointment and my midwife didn't end the appointment until I was OK.
I think you can find a better doctor with some more compassion.

Re: I just had a mental breakdown at my OB/GYN!

ok....this infuriates me !!!!!

First off, let me say something.....doctors only know a limited amount of things. It's sad but it's true. Most of them are too 'cocky' to admit that though. She is not a reproductive endo......so she believe it or not, only has a vague knowledge on infertility, and obviously endocrinology.

I am hyperthyroid.....My periods were so regular...it wasn't even funny. Low and behold.......My tsh wasn't even traceable,...my t3 and t4, were no great shakes either. After being on medication and seeing an endo for about a year.....everything is regulated...but it took 10 months to get that way ..... because my thyroid was off, it affected my progesterone levels. I don't believe I was ovulating until I started my thyroid medication.....and then, I believe, I might have had some chemical pregnancies....because I didn't know but my progesterone was low.

Now, doctors don't seem to have the time to explain things.....you are merely a 'customer' most of the time. Do your own research, and go to the appropriate doctors, and tell them what type of tests you want !!!!!

I agree with the other girls GO TO AN RE!!!!

Their job is to make you pregnant.....you need to have sonograms done all the time, they can detect cysts...(that can appear monthly)....sonograms can also tell you the size of your follies...and thickness and thinness of your lining. Sonograms and bloodwork can confirm ovulation.....and check your progesterone levels.

The hsg is so important, because she has no idea how your tubes are or your uterus.... and yes definitely a S/A needs to be done.

One thing that moronic doctor said that was correct, was....that perhaps after your HSG , you will get pregnant...it raises your chances....not because of luck, but because,...it's an oil based dye...and the suction is better after the test.....things can slip, slide and hopefully STICK....

Please forum mail me , at anytime....

You need to go to an RE....!!!!

Just to prove my case... I went to my endo tonight..who by the way is excellent, when it comes to my thyroid issue....however...we started talking about my infertility issue...and I said...next month they will do IUI....and he made me ...explain that to him...:) lol I also spoke of clomid, and he said , well, if you ovulate already, why do you need clomid...and I explained that to him as well :) Bottom line, be your own advocate...and research research research :).....

www.fertilityfriend.com is a great site....because you can 'chat live' and post your chart and learn so much from other girls.

OMG, sweetie, I'm so sorry that happened to you... you were emotional to begin with coming in after a year of trying! That's exactly why I don't see female ob/gyn's anymore - I've always had similar experiences. But, look at it this way, you wanted to wait for your ob/gyn appointment to decide whether or not to make an appointment with an RE, right? So look at this as some sort of divine intervention to FORCE you to go see an RE... everything is pointing in that direction. Like someone said, if you're in the mood for Italian, go to your favorite italian restaurant, not a diner. Well, this Doc of yours is the crappiest of diners, so get your arse to the best, best, best Italian restaurant. And in the meantime, you need to get yourself a new ob/gyn because when you DO get pregnant, which you will, there's no way in hell you're going to let this incompetent and insensitive wench be in charge of your pumpkin's care!!!!

P.S. - want me to sue her for you?

Awful! I'm so sorry your dr. treated you that way. I agree with the others, find a new doctor - one that you are comfortable with.

I hope your tests go well!

OMG, you have been trying over a year! She shouldn't say there isn't anything wrong with you without doing all the testing!!! I cannot believe she discouraged you to get an ultrasound(sonogram). As a matter of fact, that is how they found my fibroids!

Goodluck with your new search for a doctor!

What is it with some doctors? Why do patients have to fight so much? I feel like some docs don't take into account the fact that while they have medical expertise we have expertise about what is going on in our bodies. But that's not often considered.

ITA! Thinking back on my last docotor, who I was thought was great, I now realize was a shmuck! I am glad I stood firm and believed in what I knew about my body to go and find a new doctor.
I have only been to this guy three times and he is 10 gazillion infinity times better than my old dr.
Stand firm ladies, it's our bodies we are talking about.

I ma SO sorry to hear this!! I think it's time for a more empathetic doctor. Your doctor should not be saying there is nothing wrong with you, etc. They should be reassuring that IF there is a problem, she will work with you to find it and fix it@!!!

I am so sorry to hear this, you definetly need to get a new doctor, her attitude is a little to lax for me, you were clearly upset and it seems as though she was saying your feelings aren't valid, meanwhile, how could she know if she doesn't run any sort of tests?? Just by looking at you?! Please find yourself a new doctor.

I agree.

Get a new doctor!

You need someone that is sensitive to YOU and doesn't generalize.
