Honestly ... a lot of people just don't like to give cash. They feel it's more personal to give a gift, whether they are from NY or not. And some people may not have the means to give the kind of cash that would be recognized as an appropriate gift, so they may choose to give a tangible gift, something that the couple can use. Since the overwhelming majority of people give cash, I don't think any of us need to worry.

I don't understand- I'd be happy to get things off my registry!

I agree. Why would you bother to register if all you want to get is $$?

FH's family is from OOT and I think we'll be getting actual gifts from most of them.

I'm just hoping they stick to our registry at least. One family member talked about getting us something 'special' like a self-scooping cat litter box His grandma originally wanted to get us a grill but we're on the third floor of an apt with no patio or balcony!

also, if they bring anything to NY it's going back with FILs because we're going straight to our honeymoon and then back so we cant take any of it with us!

i dont mind but we are protecting thousands of dollars we have to worry about gifts too..and carry home gifts come on....
gifts are for the shower

mind you they are purchasing off of Fortunoff and they have discontinued most of my registry items..so basically if im getting gifts i cant even return them there...., and i cant even buy the matching sets.
ughhh.

I would hope they wouldn't bring gifts to the wedding. When I have bought gifts, I always sent them in advance or right after the wedding to the bride's home, or brought it by a few days before if I was very close with them. Maybe they will bring them to the rehearsal?

Just tell them your registry has been fulfilled.

That is a good approach. I think the majority of people have NO CLUE about wedding costs today. Cash always makes the best gift, however some people find it impersonal and not traditional.

i totally agree!!!

Re: I KNOW THIS MAY BE BAD

when we went to a wedding in Marlyand we gave cash, I felt a little odd since there were no envelopes there and it was a table full of gifts, a ton of them. I gave a decent amount of money, nothing what I would of called a large cash gift and she nearly fainted from it. When she sent us a thank you card she underlined EXTREMELY GENEROUS and put it in bold. She then called me to tell me she cried when she opened it. I am guessing other states typically don't give cash. I casually asked her how much people typically gives for a couple at a wedding there and she said a couple if they give cash give like 50 bucks or spend that on a present. I know attending a ny wedding I would of been talked about for years to come. It's just different from state to state i guess.

i would be upset too as terrible as it sounds....because youre laying out ALL THIS MONEY (more money than any middle of america wedding) and then someone gets you a vase.

and yes, a wedding shouldnt be a ploy to make cash, but it sure can help!

I get what you mean, it's definitely a New York thing to give cash, FH and I went to Florida for my cousin's wedding and were shocked to see the table full of gifts and the no choice of menu, it was definitely a different wedding culture.

My friend purchased everything so that this wouldn't happen. Maybe you can do the same or just delete everything. I've only been to weddings where we gave cash. Gifts were given at the shower or even the engagement.
