I like a place but it is far..should I reconsider?

I really like this place upstate..in Kingston..but its about an hour and a half drive from all my relatives..and I am not sure if they will travel it or not. I would like to know what other brides would do...would you book the hall because you LOVE it and can defintely see yourself being married there..or choose a closer place that accomdates guests..I need help!!

Thanks!

Are there any hotels around it? I have been to some weddings upstate where I was fine traveling, but the nearest hotel was 45 minutes away. That totally stinks.

We got married at a place in Patchogue and the closet relatives and friends we had were in the Bronx. Most were upstate, or NJ or CT. They all came. But our hotel was 3 minutes away from the hall too. They liked that. So, people will travel, but I think they like to know they aren't in the middle of nowhere.

That's a tough situation & a lot to consider. Do you live on LI as well? An hour and a half is a lot to ask of your guests (and for you on your wedding day!) to travel both there and back to get to your wedding (that's at least 3 hrs of driving in one day unless they're willing to get a hotel)... if people do come, many would probably leave early and many would probably be annoyed at the distance. Unless you really don't mind if that many people reply 'no', then I would choose another location. There are tons of reception halls closer & more convenient, and I'm sure there's at least one that you'd absolutely love just as much. I'd suggest taking a look and doing your best to find something that will be easier on you & your guests. I know how hard it is when you love a certain place though.
Good luck!!

I would have to say that if you really like it and there are places for guests to stay if they need to, go for it. Most of our guests travelled from NJ or CT or 'way out east' to get to our wedding and we had it 'close to home' and they all made both ends of the trip in one day. Some people might gripe...but some people (who were CLOSE) griped about how far my wedding was! You will NOT please everyone with any choice...so honestly, I say do what makes YOU happy, ultimately, it's YOUR day...not theirs.

Good luck!!!!

I have to say I wouldn't book it. A big consideration for us was not to totally put our guests out in terms of location. JMHO - I didn't think it should be a lot of work for our guests to be kind enough to come to our wedding.

There are lots and lots of beautiful places. How long have you been looking? How many places have you seen?

I agree, I would look for something closer. EVen if it's your day, you have to be considerate of your guests too. Unless you're doing this to weed out the ones who truly want to attend. ;)

I'm having mine 1.5 hours away from friends and family on FH's side and I'm quite concerned we would not be able to make the minimum if half of them don't show up.

One thing to consider is hotel accommadations for your guests. FH's best man lives in Kingston and we usually go up their once a year in July and stay overnight. We have never ever had good luck finding a decent hotel or motel to stay in. Granted, we always seem to go when there is some big racing weekend and a lot of places are booked up, but still....
So before you make a final decision, you might want to do your research on this.
Good luck!

I agree - To be honest with you, I would not do it, but that is just me. I would do some research on hotels and things for your guests, and maybe even ask around to your close family and friends that you definitely want to have there, and see what they think about it.

I would book it, but for me no matter where I have my wedding a majority of my guests will have to travel because mine and FH's friends and family are spread out all over the country.

If you really want to have it there, definitely look for hotels.

I've been to a couple of weddings at Hillside Manor (originally from that area). It was great.., but there really is slim pickings up there. There's such an abundance of halls in NY Metro area.

Can I ask why you chose Kingston if you and all your guests are down here?

There are hotels in that area, right off the NYS Thruway, but...it's an additional expense.

Where is it? I'm going to a wedding in Hudson Valley Report and Spa in a few weeks. FH is from Kingston, so his cousin is getting married there.

oh that looks really nice! I'm sure there are places to stay. Ask the place what hotels are close. I'm sure they can help with that. If that's where you want to have it, then you should have it there.

Frankly, I would ONLY book a place I loved that I could imagine myself getting married at. People that want to attend a wedding and share in a couple's happiness will do so wherever it is.

This is exactly how I feel.

Well I want it up in Kingston partly because the prices are more reasonable...I dont want to spend too much money..so aside from the fact that its a beautiful place...the price got me as well/

We live upstate and originally wanted the wedding up there too but the deal was if we were going to ask people to come up for the wedding, we would have to pay for their hotels.

In the end, it was cheaper for the 2 of us to go down to LI to have the wedding there.

Also, upstate weddings are VERY different then city/Long island weddings....BE AWARE it might not be what your guests are used to.

if you like kingston i would go for it... just be aware that you may need to invite alot more people to fulfull the min. head count. ie, the avg response rate is 25-30% so i would expect even less 'yes' responses than that...

also, i'ts true, you may not get as much for your money up there even if the price is cheaper.... i looked upstate too but found LIW halls provide alot more, ie. cake, ice sculpture, etc. and hall here don't nickel and dime you as much for little things.

We LOVED Flowerfield, but didn't book it because of the distance. Most of our relatives are travelling from Brooklyn, New Jersey, etc. And they would have been driving when it was dark out and we thought they'd have trouble finding it.

So ... we booked a place that was closer and more accessible ... and turned out to be less $$ too!

And I LOVE my RH, its perfect!
