I can totally relate. My FMIL can not seem to let her 'baby' go. When we moved in together I was surprised that she didn't pack herself up in his suitcase! She has always had a difficult time with these sorts of things and letting her little boy grow up. She still does, or at least she tries to do WAY too much for him. I understand that she loves him, but he is a grown man now and he should be able to do these things himself. She too still buys him clothes and food and she even offers to do our laundry for us! He would let her, but I say no way! (although it would be nice to have someone do my laundry ) But letting her would just allow her to keep those apron strings tight. I think it is important to realize that although your FMIL may do these things, it is your FH that allows her too. She will probably never stop as long as her allows her to keep doing these things. I guess I have kind of helped my FH cut the apron strings (although they are not totally severed ) When FH and I moved in together, I think he was expecting me to be his surrogate mommy. I made it clear from the beginning that I was not his mommy, nor did I want to be his mommy and that I was not going to do all of the things that his mother did. Sure, I take care of him and do things for him, but there is a difference between a wife and a mother.
