I met with Tom at Audrey's Bakery today! He was fantastic but...
Original post by EvenEdan
my fiance thinks we are crazy to spend so much money on a cake when one is already included at our hall. The cakes at our hall are unacceptable in my opinion. I don't know what to do. The cake we designed today sounds so incredible.

we told our hall we wanted to go elsewhere for a cake so the credited us for it on te bill.
Yes...NRC should do this for you if you choose to go elsewhere....we opted out of our c-pieces and we got credit for them.
PS...Tom designed our cake which was included and it truly was EXACTLY what we wanted and oh so YUMMY

I'm also going elsewhere for my cake -- I'm doing some sheet cake to keep the cost down and I'm hoping to get a credit for my hall.

This is what you do, Have your hall, do sheet cakes, and a bakery do a dummy cake. This way you can have 1 real layer in the dummy cake to cut in front of your guests, and they can be served the sheet cake

Junebride04— I think I am going to go with Audrey's. I showed my FI a pic of a past NRC cake and even he was like, 'okay, I see what you mean!' I would love to hear how it goes with Cynthia from Cakeline though. I haven't looked into them at all. Thanks!

The wife of someone I work with used to waitress at the NRC. She told me to get a cake elsewhere. She said the cake would always get dumped at the end of the night because no one wanted the leftovers. Although FH is going to KILL me for spending $$$$ on yet another thing, I think I am going to have to take her advice and go somewhere else for the cake.
Could someone FM me prices for cakes that they are getting? Has anyone discussed this with the NRC? What will they give you in exchange for the cake?

Ok you just really worried me- I started to get used to the fact that my cake wont look great but i figured i would tell them to tier it and i was going to have the florist put roses in between the layers - uggh - my dream cake is from the Cupcake cafe- i'm going to have to convince FH to up our budget again - (and i've done this many times so he wont be too happy! )

A - I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Thank goodness I have some time to think about it... I have heard from past brides that the NRC cakes don't taste bad, but that was contrary to what my co-worker's wife told me! Maybe you should wait for some of the other NRC brides to give you feedback after their weddings this spring/summer before making a decision?
I feel like if we all complain that they have to do something about it, right? I would prefer NOT to spend the $$$$ on this too. I think your idea of tiering the cake with flowers in between would look nice. The tiering would counteract the flatness of the NRC cakes. Good luck and keep me updated on what you decide!

I will - i just wish more of teh NRC that are getting married in 2004 are using the NRC cake - if they all buy cakes from outside then we'll never get more opinions!
I guess i should post a thread asking which of the 2004 NRC brides are using the cake they offer -

Wow! That is so sad that so many of you don't like their cakes. I would get together and all of you say something. Who knows what they may throw in or credit you.
Good Luck!!!

I looked around a lot for my cake - and ended up going with St Honore - I used them for my shower, grooms cake, and the wedding cake - I am getting calls and emails about them becuase others have wanted to use them - they were also almost HALF the price of audrey's and others and tasted much better IMO - you can ask any of the girls at the wedding how the cake was (Robeymuse was there as well) - if you want any info on them - FM me - here is a pic of my wedding cake: it isn't a professional photo and doesn't do it justice - if I get a better photo I will post it later

I'm a HUGE cake person, so I'd say go for the upgrade. Maybe NRC can give you a credit of sorts. Also I like the idea of a smaller nice cake for display, and sheet cakes to cut up and serve.
My cake was from Audreys. It was beautiful, exactly what I wanted, and absolutely delicious! Tom was great to work with (and cute too ).
I'd say go for it.

Georgia, I am. I decided I would rather use the money towards other things. I didn't care anymore what it looked like. I told them to make it very plain and John from Flower Michele is going to decorate it. I also had two layers stacked, then tiered the top two. I guess we will see...

I've come to the point where as long as it tastes good i dont care what it looks like. Telling them to make it plain sounds good and the flowers will make it look perfect. What flavor did you get?
You must be so excited - your day is SOOO close!!! I cant wait to hear all about it. I'm sure everythign will be perfect!
