Re: I need computer help!
If anyone can help please FM me since I am leaving now. More info: Optimum online w/ router. 2 computers hooked up to router. One (old one) is working fine, the new done doesn't work. This new computer replaced my computer when I moved out and mine always worked. Both computers have XP. Both are Dell. Thanks!

I'm not good with this stuff, but DH is. He doesn't get home until 12:30, but I'll ask him as soon as he gets home

This is going to sound stupid, but try logging out and logging back in. If that doesn't work, try restarting computer (count 10 secs before you turn it back on).
This used to happend to me when I'd be on line for a long time. Re-logging in usually did the trick. (In my case it wasn't the computer, it was the online company I was using.)

This happened to me once...try this... Disconnect the power cable from the modem and then unscrew the big thick black cable. Wait about 5 minutes then screw in the black cable and connect the power cable again. This reboots the modem. Give it a second and then the whole system should work.

Re: I need computer help!
If the optimum is shared with a router... and one computer works... then the problem is definitely NOT related to the optimum modem.
On the new computer... where you see the local area connection... right click on it and select repair.
See if this corrects the problem.
All send packets and no received means its not getting any information from whatever router you have. Repairing the connection sometimes corrects that.
If that doesn't work... unplug the power to the router and plug it back in. Then after a minute... try the repair option again on the faulty PC.

I tried the repair a few times alreadu. I also tired disconnecting everythign and turning off the power.. still nothing. I am thinking maybe our signal is too weak?

Re: I need computer help!
Would have nothing to do with a strong or weak signal.
I would check the IP address of the computer in fault. If you right click on local area connection then select status... then i believe details... you can get the IP address of the computer.
If it starts with 169.254 then the PC isn't getting its information from the router.
If it has a 192.168 number... then it probably has its information and perhaps the internet explorer isn't working.
Try going to a command prompt and type PING MAIL.DJPILL.COM
If you get a reply... you have a working internet connection. You need to check your IE settings. If it says request timed out... then the internet is definitely out with that PC and you have to check your PC/router connections.

IP address is 192.68...... It says LAN, Connected, Firewalled. Would firewalled have something to do with it? After 6 minutes 'online' sent ~500 packets, recieved only 9.

Did this twice. I got a black screen with a blinking cursor??? Then the window closed.

The page does not say timed out. it says 'This page cannot be displayed...website experiencing technical difficulties or adjust browser settings...' Maybe I have some of the settings wrong? AHHH I don't even know where to begin with changing the settings! I am going to try to write every setting down from this CPU and then double check the other CPU.

Brad's reading through the thread now and seeing if he can think of anything. We had to reset our router last week b/c the internet wasn't working with either computer, but he's not sure if it would be the same thing...

Re: I need computer help!
I already tried resetting everything. It must be one of the settings because I am on a computer right now that is set up to the same router and is working. Are there any 'hidden' settings??? I know the obvious ones are correct. the only difference I can see is in Network settings this computer says :LAN, Enabled. The other one says 'LAN, Connected, Firewalled'

is it a wired or wireless router? if wireless how far away is the computer that cant access the net? try resetting the router their should be a reset button you may have to us a pen or unbent paperclip. check the firewall settings in xp, they might be set too high.

Well, if nobody else is able to help by the time he gets home from work and he's not able to help over the computer, I'm sure he wouldn't mind coming over to take a look at it
