I forgot to ask DH last night. He works with computers all day, so he would know. I'll ask him when he gets home.
OH thanks so much! I will be here all night since my heat is broken This is just so annoying. if I can't figure it out would it be possible for me to hire your DH to do it? I am totally serious.. I will pay. I need this done. My mother is aggravating me!
Well, if nobody else is able to help by the time he gets home from work and he's not able to help over the computer, I'm sure he wouldn't mind coming over to take a look at it
Not tonight! Whenever is good for him... if Kings Park is not too far away from you guys. I don't know who else to ask for help... cablevision wont help if there is a router so Ive been told.

try typing this into the address bar http://192.168.2.1
since they are both wired try changing the cat5(looks like an over sized phone jack) its possible that it went bad. also try hooking the modem dirctly up to the computer to see if you can get online that way

technically thats true but really depends on the rep that you get and how busy they are, i have heard subs call in and when i transfer them to tech support they walk them right through and troubleshoot with them even though they have a router. also you can disco the router hook the modem directly to the computer and call tech support :)

Brad says:
I'm guessing it's a Linksys Router. If NONE of the default settings of the router have been changed then go to the end of this FM. Log into the router through your web browser: type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar. A login window will will come up, login in wuth the username and password to the router (if never altered from default settings the username is 'admin' and there is no password. Once logged into the router check out a few key areas: 1)Setup 2)Wireless (if applicable): a) Basic Wireless Settings and b)Wireless Security. Copy down those setting and then manually reset the modem by using a paperclip in the back of the modem. Then shutdown the computers, modem and router.
Leave off for a few minutes (30 seconds is fine but a few minutes is just to make sure). Tuen on the modem, let it startup completely. Then turn on the router. Then turn on the computers. Check them both out (including there IPs) I wrote this before you said the older computer's IP was different which sparks my interest a little bit with how your connection is set up.

Yes, that is marked. There are a few other things that are checked. Maybe one of these things is the problem:
Client for microsoft networks File and printer sharing formicrosoft networks QoS Packet Scheduler <-- what is this? TCp/IP

Make sure on your computer thats not working... its set up to obtain an IP address automatically.
You do this by going into the properties of the local area connection... then properties of TCP/IP.
Make sure DNS is set to obtain automatically as well.
The reason why this isn't working is because its not obtaining a proper IP address from the router.
It should get a 192.168 address like the working computer gets. Something that starts with a 69. or whatever is strange. Is that a new computer? Or was it previously used for something else? Maybe DSL perhaps?
The gateway address to the router is most likely 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1
Its probably not 192.168.2.1.

They've established it's not the modem, and he's having her manually reset her router.

Nah... didnt read the whole thing. i see now what you post.
I bet that PC was used for something else prior.... like DSL and it required a set IP address.
