I need some help in making this decision... (a little long)

Original post by MrsC2be

I am starting law school this august and initially planned to get married next august. The issue at hand is that I am already getting busy with l. school related issues, (loans, pre-law school prep classes..yes im a dork etc) I have had no time to get anything wedding related accomplished as i wanted to before school began. I am trying to decide if we should change our date to summer of 2008, as it is almost August, my wedding will soon be LESS than a year away...and ive gotten NOTHING done, and will be starting my first year of law school- and dont plan on getting too much done since school is most important. Honest opinions are needed as this is a tricky situation.

The major downside is that i'd have to wait even longer to kiss my FH. We are both Christians and do not have a sexually physical relationship.

Sorry this is so long. Thanks for your help.

Honestly you can plan a wedding in a couple of months, I've seen it done. My mom has a friend who's daughter planned her wedding in less than 5 months.

If I were you I'd do it 2007, you'll have your first year done of law school and you should be ok.

If you take a day or two out of each month over the next few months to look at vendors you'll be right on schedule and can do this by next August.

You don't even need a wedding planner. If anything you can always hire a DOC for day of.

And don't forget you have us LIW girls to help you.

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions....the FH and i need to think LOOONG and hard before we decide on a year... i just dont want to commit to 2007 then find myself overwhelemed with 1L --since getting the hightest grades pos. is my number ONE priority-- and be forced to switch the date or something like that, and risk losing money, or end up having the wedding look thrown together. You all have given me lots of foods for thought..thanks so much! ill keep you all posted !!!

once you book your rh & get your dress, everything comes together. It seems like there is so much to do, but everything falls into place...
this websiter is very helpful w/ picking out dj's,photos & flowers & stuff which will help eliminate vendors & making appt's for that. I would for 07 if you really want to....utilize this site & peoples opinions & it will make planning a lot easier... good luck

I'd rather get married the summer after the first year than second year so long as you think you can concentrate on your studies during the first year. A lot of firms do not hire 1st year law students for the summer. Most people intern for judges, government agencies, etc., work for professors, or work for small firms/solo practitioners. While many schools have the writing competition during the summer, it tends to be during the first few weeks after classes end. August would be a perfect time to get married. Most summer jobs end in August and if you have an internship, you can probably end it even earlier b/c of the wedding. You'd also have a decent amount of free time to finalize last minute details. The only potential problem might be the interview process. Many schools, especially in NYC, begin their interviews for second summer jobs in July or August. I'd check with your school to find out when that takes place b/c you don't want to miss out on that.

You second summer job is much more important. This is typically the job that will give you a permanent offer of employment. Depending on where you work, the hours may be long. Also, you probably won't have any free time during the day to work on wedding plans.

I also found second year to be busier and more demanding than first year, mainly b/c of the extraordinary amount of work I had to do on Law Review. Journals can be very demanding and take up a lot of time.

Good luck in whatever you decide. If you have any questions about law school, FM me.

yes, but she wouldnt get a second summer job unless her first year grades are steller
I tihnk thats more of her concern, whether she can keep her grades up 1l while planning a wedding.
I think wedding planning is way easier second year, and then by august she would be done with her summer associate position.

My summer associate job ended 1 week before I had to be back for Law Review orientation. Someone the year after me cut his HM short b/c he had to go to the orientation. Personally, I think it's more difficult to get married the summer after second year b/c there are a lot more time commitments that summer. Once the major vendors are booked, you can relax for a few months and concentrate on your studies. It gets crazier again the last 2-3 months before the wedding. I'd be more worried about finalizing details during a second summer job than a job after first year, since that job tends to be less stressful. JMO.

you had a law review orientation after your second year?
Hmm, maybe its different in diff schools. we had orientation the summer after first year, and thats when we started doing the assisngments. the the entire second year we had assignments
Summer after second year we had to grade the WC, but thats it. i had august super free!

I say have it August 2007. The following August you will be graduating, studying for the bar and looking for a job so it will be just as stressful, if not more so. There will always be something going on.

I agree I would not postpone it, get married be with your sweetie and you and he will get through law school together.

Actually, I had Law Review orientation both years-the first time, to become acquainted with Law Review and how it works, and the second time, depending on the positions we held, many of us needed to be back for orientation. We also graded the writing competition after our second summer which was a PITA. I didn't have much free time either summer, but it would've been a lot easier to end my first summer job earlier than my summer associate position after second summer.

wow! i guess i should've asked this outside of this post (sorry i got it off track )
