I Need Some Help...ANY GREEK BRIDES NOT MARRYING GREEK?

Original post by emomma17

How are you working the whole wedding, church and raising of your children, if you don't mind me asking. I am all over the place right now and wanted to know if anyone could shed some light. Are you allowed to marry in a Greek church but christen your children in a Catholic church? or have a Greek priest at a chatholic church for the ceremony?? any information would be helpful thanks!

I think you should speak to someone in the church for best advice, maybe call or email the Greek priest..I also think that your FH would have to be baptised to be able to marry in a Greek church...but to be on the safe side and for later on when you have children, I would speak to the source

Both of my older cousins married non-Greeks...my aunt made a big deal about them getting married in the Greek church, and so they did. Both of their husbands are Catholics, and they did not need to be baptised Greek Orthodox...the Catholic baptism is recognized in the Orthodox church. The only thing the husbands can't do is receive communion because they're not baptised in the Orthodox church (don't ask me why, that's just what they were told).

My cousins have brought up their kids Greek Orthodox only because their FH were not as religious. I know this doesn't help answer your question, but in the end things work out.

There are so many Greeks marrying non-Greeks these days that the rules can be relaxed in most circumstances to accomodate requests. If your FH's uncle is a priest and you want him to be at the greek ceremony, they should be able to accomodate that.

Good luck!!

hey, i am catholic and my FH is greek orthodox. neither of us are religious, but we did want to be married in church. while the greek church is stricter in some respects, in our case i thought the catholic church was stricter. while the GOC allows me to be married there simply because i was baptized, its not that easy for a non-catholic to marry in a catholic church (in our experience!). in some cases they want the non-catholic to be confirmed and for the couple to promise the raise the children catholic. but ofcourse it totally depends on what church you belong to. some are more lax. hope this helps & good luck - when we first got engaged this issue was huge for us. we finally decided to get married in the greek church because they were so open to us when we visited.

i am christian orthodox but getting married in a catholic church...it was so easy, all they asked for is my baptismal certificate 6 months prior to the wedding and thats it...we did pre-cana and i didn't have to promose to baptise my kids catholic
