I need to settle a discussion (e-parties)

Original post by jenny2penny

do you or don't you have to have one.

My FH said you have to have an e-party if you are having a wedding. I said are you crazy, no you don't. I think in his family it's customary. And he sees it a one of the few times the family gets together. (sadly, not everyone is coming though)

You definitely do not have to have one. FH and I arent having one. Mostly to save money. Whatever money we would be spending on the e-party would be deducted from the budget of my dream wedding. I would rather wow my guests once rather than just be so-so twice. JMO. FH and I may have a small gathering with immediate family but that is it, no invites, no centerpieces, no music - just dinner and each others company.

We had one because we were are having a long engagement. Some of our family did not believe in this, some did. There is no written rule either way, it's really up to the family or couple throwing it.

We didn't have one. Our engagement was about a year long so we didn't see it as being necessary. If our engagement was 18-months or two-years long, we would probably have considered it. I think it's up to the couple to decide to have an e-party, not up to relatives or etiquette.

We are definitely having one. My reason is that neither my family nor his as well as many friends have not met yet. I thought it would be good to get people somewhat acquainted before the wedding. I don't really care about gifts; however. I haven't even registered yet!

as far as i know you do not have to have one - but lots of people do!
my family didn't do it in the past - but we did for my wedding. It wasn't a huge extravagent affair - just a small get together in my parent's backyard so the two families and bridal party could all meet each other and get to know each other a little.
It turned out to be a beautiful day and everyone (as far as i know) had a great time.
But it is completely your choice and nothing is set in stone!!

There is no hard and fast rule. We had one cuz my mom wanted one, otherwise I probably wouldn't have bothered.
