i need your opinion--my mom is paying for everything and fh's parents aren't contributing is it ok to thank my mom publically at the wedding?

Original post by the future mrs m

Fh & I are giving my mom a trip to vegas for her 65th birthday and for giving us the wedding. his parents arent and havent yet given a dime. I want to acknowledge my mom publically w/ a big thank you at the wedding & her plane ticket. do you think this is inappropriate? i bought fh's parents little stuff, too. but like hankies that i would give them before. I love his parents but they haven't even asked what they could do. they just gasp everytime they hear a price related to the wedding. what do you think?

Yeah I know how you feel. My mom is helping me soo much and FIL have not either. I wouldnt thank her at the wedding because it will come off offensive and may seem rude. What I plan on doing for my mom is dancing to In my Daughters Eyes, to personally thank her.

i disagree..i think you should thank her publicly.. i plan on thanking my mother publicly at our reception.. she did a WHOLE LOT for both me and fh.. and his parents haven't done anything. In our newsletter i thanked both of them and then added a second line thanking her for helping us make our day so special.. i'm sorry if it makes the in laws feel uncomfortable, but i don't see any reason why i should short my mom (who coincidentally, has also has been through so much with my dad passing and still managed to assist us in pulling this off) just to make them feel more comfortable.. so yep.. when it's my turn to talk at the reception, i'm going to give her the accolades that she deserves.

its not just about that...its about the fact that who paid for the wedding i think shouldn't be discussed to the guests. If im a guest at a wedding, i dont want to hear 'thank you to X for paying for my wedding' Like i said a speech to thank parents for always being there for you throughout your whole life is different. To publicly announce who paid is just not what any guest should know.

Well are FH's parents not contributing because they dont have the money, or are they just otherwise reluctant?

I would give your mom her ticket at the rehearsal dinner and FH's parents their hankies at rehaersal dinner.

I think it is ok to take the microphone at the end of the night and thank everyone for coming and special thanks to anyone that played a part in making this day special 'Especially my mom'

She paid for it-she earned the thank you

i wouldnt do it. Interupting the flow of your wedding to publically thank your mom doesnt seem appropriate. I would privately thank her with FH for all that she has done. Or you can do it at the rehersal dinner

IMO I think its okay to thank the mom - but to say something like Thank you so much for all your help in making my wedding day so special, it couldn't have been done without you.

Mentioning the money is awkward - not b/c of the FIL's, but b/c of the guests. And if your FIL's feel left out that they don't get a special mention, well so be it (but that's just my attitude).

oh o agree with you on that.. i guess i should clarify.. i wouldn't say thank you for paying for my wedding.. no.. i agree, who paid for the wedding is NO ONE'S business..but i see nothing wrong with thanking her for her help and assistance... I wouldn't say nor would i suggest specifically saying something to the effect of thanks mom for payin .. you are right that no one should publicly announce who paid for what.. i wouldn't want to hear all that either.
