How quickly did you add mileage to your runs??? I'm planning on adding 1/2 per week to my runs.

Re: I ran 4 miles this morning

I am now running about 10 1/2 min mile. getting there. I can now easlily run the first 1.5 miles, after thart I need to keep focused on running and my mind occupied looking at something (or thinking of me in my dress with my underarm fat hangover )

I've tried getting into running SO many times. I just have such a hard time. I seem to get stitches in my side almost every single time I run. How do I avoid that?

Congrats! It's it a great feeling once you are finished? You feel so much healthier right?

I have been running about 30-40 miles a week for the past year and I sware it has made such a difference in my energy through out the day. I run in the morning, and for awhile I was so beat up, but now I am so used to it that I feel as though I have so much more energy to make it through the day!

Keep up the good work!!

Annie- what are stitches? cramps? Are you drinking a lot of water before you run? that is a cause of cramps. Also, are you stretching?

Re: I ran 4 miles this morning

Really? I heard the opposite is true - that if you don't drink enough water you get cramps. Well anyway, I don't drink a lot of water before I run. I don't like it sloshing around in my stomach!

But yes, by stitches in my side I mean cramps. It's always in my right side too. Can stretching help that? The cramps get worse and worse as I run and nothing seems to help other than to stop.

Well you should def. hydrate yourself, but by drinking too much water you can cause cramping. If you are running and you get a cramp, usually if you bend down on the cramp it will fade away, but your best bet may be to just stop. Sure, you def. can try stretching. Do you eat banana's? Try eating half a banana before you run. Not right before, but about 30 minutes prior. The potassium is good for your muscles.

Re: I ran 4 miles this morning

annie,
i had the same problem when i started running. definitely drink some water before you start, but not too much. bananas help too as mentioned. also i found that oatmeal seemed to help. once you get the cramp start walking and breathe out on the opposite foot from where the cramp is. cramp on the right, breathe out when you put your left foot down. sounds stupid but it works. it also helps if you think about breathing from your diaphragm. like in singing if you have any experience with that. also try pursing your lips as you breathe out and forcing the air out. once it starts to go away try to do a slow jog and see how it feels. if you can't run at all at least keep walking for a while and work on your breathing.

trust me i know how annoying they can be. but if you keep running eventually they will get better and go away. the most important thing i've found is to concentrate on fully breathing b/c shallow breathing is frequently the cause of the cramp.

good luck!!
