I realized yesterday that I don't like Christmas anymore!

I realized yesterday that I don't like Christmas anymore!

So many gifts that are expected and unappreciated!
Kids ripping open presents, barely looking at what the gift is before grabbing for another one.
No 'Thank Yous' from any kids or their parents.
Is it just our families that have these super greedy whiny kids? I don't remember Christmas being like this when I was younger.
Next year is going to be different. I want to find a needy kid to 'adopt' And spend the day with only Ray and Gizmo.

I think its a reflection of the parents -- its their job to teach the children to say thank you. I don't know what's wrong with parents today! I am a teacher and I see it all the time... the children are spoiled like mad! I think it is all of the guilt that parents feel from working all of the time -- they feel bad about not being around, so they spoil their children whenever they are around, to make up for it!

awwww Im sorry that happened to you, that the kids didn't say thank you. no my all my nephew's and niece's both said thank you too me.and so did the parents. Maybe the kids were overwhelmed over christmas and didn't realize they didn't say thank you. I mean for the parents not to say thank you is disrepectful,I would have a talk with the parents on how they acted and how they acted on not saying thank you affects the kids to act the same way. just an Idea sorry i dont mean to sound mean but thats what i would do. dont let them stop you from enjoying christmas.

Honestly, I think that it is another example of overindulgence in our society. I don't remember receiving so much as a child. Kids get so much, and expect so much, that they aren't grateful. So sad....

I agree it is all in how the kids are raised. Last night after Christmas at my parents we had the greatest gift knock on my parents door. On my parents porch were 7 little kids that were from their block came and sung Christmas carols and wished the people on the block a merry Christmas door to door. My father filled up with tears as my whole family flocked to the door and sung along. This is what Christmas is about. Giving to others not getting. I was raised this way all of my life. My father went yesterday in to the city to feed the homeless and gave out gloves and hats to all of the people who needed them. None of the children in my fam were or are the give me greedy type. It is sad to see what Christmas has evolved into.

i saw some of this too!
My DH's little brother was like this (he is 8). All he cared about is the presents and getting more...
One of the gifts we got them was Elf and Shrek 2.
He points to this with a disgusted sad look and said..'We have this already' and then just threw it aside....NO THANK YOU WHAT SO EVER!
BUT his little sister (they are twins) picked it up and yelled at her brother and said...'NO WE DIDN'T' and smiled and gave me a hug...
i foud out later that yes they did have it...DH's little sister just didn't want me to feel bad!

SO i guess with every spoiled kid there is one who acts respectful and thankful...

this is why Rich doesn't like Christmas...too commercialized. That is why we stuck to a $20 budget for kids.....and they liked what they got. Rich and I didn't spend hundreds of dollars on each other either.....just meaningful gifts.

I just do not understand parents that go out and buy super expensive gifts for their kids (razor scooters, game systems, etc) or pay excessive amounts of $$ for things that are hard to come by (form what I hear this year it was some Sponge Bob Krabby Patty maker toy). They get so bored with it after a month or a week.

We plan on showing our children what it truly means to give and be a ppreciative of what they do receive.....and speaking of which...I should write out some Thank Yous for the gifts we got!

I'm sorry that the children were not appreciative. It is a shame to see that when as you said there are many needy kids out there who have nothing.

Re: I realized yesterday that I don't like Christmas anymore!

I got to tell you this year for my kids I thought i had more gifts for my boys but I didnt I spent a total. I calculated this as I gave it to them. my own kids 100.00, between the two and when they opend them my older one said I must have been good this year cause Santa got me exactly what I wanted. I should write him a letter and thank him. Which I thought was strange but put a smile on my face cause I do all the shopping.

When we were at my MIL's house I spent more on my necice and nephew and not one thank you and we had to wait for them to open the gifts. My SIL asked if I had the gift receipt for my neices gifts. AlL of them. Gee your welcome have a nice holiday. I think it has a lot to do with the parents.

One thinbg we told my boys is if they are not good santa will come back and take there gifts away, when they are sleeping

I feel like this happens when kids get things through out the year....if everytime you walk into Kmart and the kid gets a toy, isn't that like Christmas everyday. I think B-days and christmas for toys, my cousins are the same, opened presents and went back to TV watching.

I like that!

The only kids in our family are my 12 & 16 year old couins. They were apprecaitive. The 12 year old I just got a gift card to Game stop, but I had gotten him a little wooden bobble-head turlrtle from a flea market in St. Martin on my HM, & he LOVED it! I was so happy. It was the little $4 imperfect hand made thing, but he thought it was cool.

And he brought with him the board game I gave him for his birthday in July & we all played &it was fun. I was happy about that, b/c it wasn't anything he had heard of or asked for, I just thought he'd like it & he does. He just needed some help gettign started & his othe r grandmother showed him on Thanksgiving & now he loves it!

They kinda have $ too, anf he does have some expensive stuff ( like a Nintendo DS), so I am so proud of him, when I see how appreciative he is of everything even his little $4 turtle. And he let all the adults play his Nintendo DS, too.

yeah, my mom stopped getting my cousins gifts because of this... they would just open it, throw it to the side, and walk away.

When I was little my mom always had me walk around and thank everyone and hug them, after a while it just became a habit.

My half brother and sister are def more spoiled than i was... my brother said to me 'my gift better be good this year' I was discusted since he's 16, has a job, and my dad and step-mom still pay for his gifts to everyone... I've been buying my own gifts for people since i was 7... mind you, they sucked, but they were from me and taught me what it was like to give to others...

My nieces and nephews were very appreciative but only because my brothers raise them strictly. After each gift they thanked the person and then went on to the next one. Unfortunately from what I see from society that is not the norm. Parents are way too lenient nowadays

Re: I realized yesterday that I don't like Christmas anymore!

I have been celebrating Christmas with Dh's family for three years now. He has (well me too now) a nephew and niece who are now 8 and 4. They are really spoiled and get hundreds and hundreds of dollars of gifts every year. Last year our nephew, who was seven at the time, got a tv, dvd, and the satellite hookup in his room. Then he got Bad Boys II on dvd and the 8 mile CD!!! Why would ANYONE give a seven year old that stuff??? We always ask SIL what they need and get them a lot of stuff - but not just video games - I refuse to. We get them art supplies, books, toys, etc.
We have never gotten a thank you from the kids or a thank you note - I was brought up writing thank you notes for everything!!!
This year we got my niece gorgeous clothes and a toy because her mom said she needed clothes - my nephew's comment was - eww - why did you get her clothes? He could barely get the wrapping paper off of one present before he would throw it aside and go to the next one.
I am sick of it with them. I know they're little kids - but they are not being brought up in a gracious way at all!

Re: I realized yesterday that I don't like Christmas anymore!

Although my nieces and nephews always say thank you and all, it is so obvious that they get TOO much and dont appreciate 90% of it! This year was alittle better but we are not quite there yet! A few years ago I saw my niece the day after and when I asked her what she got for christmas she was hard pressed to remember anything but 1 or 2 items (out of the 100) THis year my nephew got upset b/c on christmas eve all he got was 3 gifts while his sister got 6. Meanwhile, on christmas eve he gets a gift or 2 from santa and just from those who he wont see on Christmas day!

I think that we over spoil the children (I too am guility with my all of my neices and nephews) and they come to expect it!

However my 3 year old nephew was very appreciative! When he opened his mothers george forman grill you would have thought we bought him a pony!!! And my niece also three got very excited for Grandpa's food saver! It is fun to see the younger kids reactions!

Unfortunately your right! Christmas has become too commercialized and all about the gifts for kids and adults too! Their lists are getting longer and more expensive every year and it just seems the appreciation isn't there anymore.

I believe it really has to do with the parents - and their upbringing, the children really don't know any better and the values and appreciation are really taught in the home - thats where it begins.

Julz, next year you and Ray can adopt one of the homeless families I work with. One of the girls on here did and she had so much fun shopping for 'her' family and went WAY overboard for them but I can tell you there was a tremendous amount of appreciation from that entire family! I get so angry when I see kids (and adults) acting the way you described. That's how you know they take what they have for granted and don't remember the TRUE meaning of Christmas.
