I realized yesterday that I don't like Christmas anymore!
Original post by julz33
So many gifts that are expected and unappreciated! Kids ripping open presents, barely looking at what the gift is before grabbing for another one. No 'Thank Yous' from any kids or their parents. Is it just our families that have these super greedy whiny kids? I don't remember Christmas being like this when I was younger. Next year is going to be different. I want to find a needy kid to 'adopt' And spend the day with only Ray and Gizmo.

i think that kids' reactions are relative to their living situation. I know when I was growing up, we were middle class. My dad made an average income. I didn't miss out on having things, but I wasn't spoiled. I didn't get the 'newest' toy the second it came out. i would have to earn it through grades or by being respectful of peers. So, when I finally got a gift, I appreciated it because I had made the effort to deserve it.
For example, we got our first VCR about 3 years after they came out. I got my first Nintendo about a year after it came out. It was at least 3 years before I bought my first cell phone and 2 years before I had a DVD player.
It's just a matter of not getting everything exactly when you want it, makes you appreciate it more.

It's not just your family... unfortunately for me, its not the greedy kids, it's the greedy adults!!!
Hope you all had a Happy Holiday!!

i agree. my neice's & nephews are spoiled as hell!! so of their reaction won't be so gratefull.
my neice is going to be 2 in march so you really won't get a big reaction out of her but she was very very excited to get all her toys
my oldest nephew is very grateful
but the middle one --man he does not appreciate anything.

My niece (6 years old) is kind of spoiled with stuff, but she is not a spoiled brat. My sister buys her a lot of stuff, but shes very quick to take it away if my niece misbehaves, and she tends to get something after good behavior. On Christmas this child was so appreciative of everything she opened up. When she saw that DH and I bought her a TV for her bedroom (not even a really big one), she almost choked us with the big hugs she gave. She hugged my aunt and uncle just as hard for the coloring book and crayons. She understands that a gift is a gift and you must always say thank you. Mind you, she didn't learn that overnight, but she gets it now.

This is so true. Some kids have no respect at all. My nephew is like this. He's my husband's nephew. He is an only child. But he could be such a brat!!

It definitely is a reflection of the parents, but I do believe that American children (and adults) are getting greedier as the years progress. It's sad.

If everyone feels their nieces or nephews are spolied then maybe you shouldn't give them anything
