I think I am the only person who beleives that the Terri Shievo case is just horrible (M)

I truly do not feel that her husband had the right to make that decision to end her life. I think it is utterly horrible that she is being starved to death.
What does he gain from her death? NOTHING...I just can't imagine watching your child die right in front of you...I know that she doesn't have any brain function, but still, she is being starved to death and I just think that is WRONG!

Did you know that a corporation offered him a million dollars to stop his fight and he turned them dow? To me that makes me realize its not about the money for him.

Redhead - Um, I think you are still missing my point. This is Terry's life, the choice to terminate it should be only hers.
I believe life is sacred. God gave me life and he should decide when it is taken away. So, to answer your question, yes, I would live like that, until I died naturally.
I think it is one thing to make your own choice but, to impose a death sentence on someone else doesn't make sense to me. I read in another post how you called it 'disgusting' to keep these people around. I don't understand - who should decide when a person's existence becomes 'disgusting' - should it be a neutral arbiter and not even the person themselves? Should we as a society start killing the disabled, the mentally ill etc. because we don't deem their life worthy of living?
actually i am not missing yoru point...you are missing mine. But that is ok...you see this situation as just that...life or death..ANd since we fundamentally disagree on that very statement...there is disagreement.
I wouldn't want my worst enemy kept like that...AT BEST it is absolute torture!
AND since she didn't make her wishes known then it goes to the husband and if you believe in all that you say...no need to bring anything up about the Dh being suspect on his motives...that is irrelevant!
I would hope that God would never want anyone to live like that...In fact i don't.
I work with the disabled so don't make that association to them....thanks...there is no comparison AT ALL!

He can't stop it now because it became a court case and then a court ruling to have the tube removed. He would have to go back to the court and win a new court order to have the tube reinserted.

I agree that there are some people who don't realize the severity of the impairment. But, there are people who just don't agree with the removal of the tube- for other reasons that don't have anything to do with a lack of understanding of the medical condition.

I think it was before Jeb, but still after the court involvement. The court cases started in 1998, so even the first $ offer came after the first court case.

Moe - Wow, I find your comment completely appalling. Really, appalling. You don't know ANYONE'S situation or where they are coming from SO seriously how DARE you make a comment like that. My grandma who I love DEARLY is on a feeding tube - she had a stroke exactly a year ago. This is HER choice. My family and I LOVE AND CHERISH the time we spend with her.
I'm not going to respond to this thread anymore. ITs just utterly ridiculous. Your comment is HURTFUL AND COMPLETELY IGNORANT.

It's not that easy. He couldn't just take the money and have the tube put back in.
After the removal of the tube became a court ruling, he would have had to go back to court and petition that it be reinserted. The court never would have ruled in his favor after already deciding to remove the tube.
It was pointless for that $ offer to be made because he no longer has the power to reinsert the tube.

I have been to SEVERAL nursing homes all over LI AND some in FLorida...AND let me tell you...i wouldn't want my DOG to live there one day! SHe wan't talking about anyones experience but her own so she commented on such! AND i agree with her 100% If some of you saw what it is actually like...YOU WOULD BE APPALLED!

Sorry you are appalled. I never said your grandma shouldn't be on a feeding tube, if that is her wish OF COURSE you should respect it!!
As far as you think of my comment being ignorant than I believe you are being rude and presumptuos of my life and my experiences. There really was no need for your appalling comment!
If people are so impassioned about this topic than what is wrong with suggesting they volunteer their time to help patients in need? Seriously if you can't be civil than maybe you shouldn't respond.

in all honesty i have a lot of patients that should be in nursing homes because they are elderly and couldn't benefit from a facility like mine BUT we would never send them there.... People would rather they spend their last days in a PSYCHIATRIC CENTER than go in a nursing home!!

I'll get flamed for this, but if my husband became brain dead now at 27 I would probably eventually (5 years or so down the line) divorce him and try to find love again and have children. I would hope the same for him if I was in that situation. I think Michael was wrong not to divorce Terry, but I don't fault him for moving on (maybe not quite as quickly as some say he did, but that's a personal issue). My vows say til death do us part, but I would consider til brain dead a good enough substitution. I would trust many doctors opinions of what would be a point of no return, which Michael has in Terry's case.

me and fh was talking about this the other day. it might be morbid at our age(i'm 33 and he's 27), but we need a living will. we don't want our families to go through what her family is going through. it would state, god forbid we're on life support, how long we want to be on that. yes he found someone, but i'm sure he's still hurting

Right, and if she wasn't on the feeding tube, God would have taken her A LONG TIME AGO, not torture her like this..
This is all about the selfishness of humans, the husband, AND THE PARENTS! They are too selfish to let her go. They would rather keep her alive so they can have her with them than let her die and finally have some PEACE, REAL PEACE !
You don't make sense

Re: I think I am the only person who beleives that the Terri Shievo case is just horrible (M)
There was a case in 1976, when the parent removed her daughter from Life Support and she went on to live for 15 years after the removal. She wasn't ready to die yet, it wasn't her time.
I beleive that people choose when to die. I know my father did. When we took him off the ventalator, it took him almost a month to die. He wasn't ready to go and I certainly didn't choose to starve him.

Re: I think I am the only person who beleives that the Terri Shievo case is just horrible (M)
i gave this some thought and am going to respond this way:
Red is right in the sense that it is about Terri and her wishes. I will agree with that to a point. I see a big difference between a feeding tube and a ventilator. Boosh's grandmother who recently died, had a feeding tube in her and died of natural causes on Christmas day. The feeding tube didin't keep her alive. My point is that Terri could have had the feeding tube in and died of natural causes anyway. She's not hooked up to any breathing machine, at least I don't think she is. I don't see where the feeding tube would add to her life expectancy, whereas, starving her will most definitely kill her. They say her condition has gotten worse over the years. So, to me, feeding tube or not she was going to die soon. But, only nature and God determines when it is her time -- not her parents, not the husband and not the government. Before people start slamming me for bringing the church into it, I said it's up to God, who is universal and recognized by many religions who recognize the presence of a supreme being.
If she slipped into a coma and stopped breathing, I agree, let her go and don't put her on life support. But in the state she's in, the feeding tube is not life support. She could stiill die at any time. What they are doing is starving her, is to speed up the process, tampering with nature's will and God's will. And to me, barring any religious pretext, is socially, morally and ethically wrong.
To Red and those who disagree, I respect your opinion. I haven't had much exposure to people like that. Perhaps if I was as entrenched as some of you are, I may feel differently. But for now, that's how I feel.
