I think I am the only person who beleives that the Terri Shievo case is just horrible (M)

Original post by WeddingsRock

I truly do not feel that her husband had the right to make that decision to end her life. I think it is utterly horrible that she is being starved to death.

What does he gain from her death? NOTHING...I just can't imagine watching your child die right in front of you...I know that she doesn't have any brain function, but still, she is being starved to death and I just think that is WRONG!

i gave this some thought and am going to respond this way:

Red is right in the sense that it is about Terri and her wishes. I will agree with that to a point. I see a big difference between a feeding tube and a ventilator. Boosh's grandmother who recently died, had a feeding tube in her and died of natural causes on Christmas day. The feeding tube didin't keep her alive. My point is that Terri could have had the feeding tube in and died of natural causes anyway. She's not hooked up to any breathing machine, at least I don't think she is. I don't see where the feeding tube would add to her life expectancy, whereas, starving her will most definitely kill her. They say her condition has gotten worse over the years. So, to me, feeding tube or not she was going to die soon. But, only nature and God determines when it is her time -- not her parents, not the husband and not the government. Before people start slamming me for bringing the church into it, I said it's up to God, who is universal and recognized by many religions who recognize the presence of a supreme being.

.

THe thing is..she is 40 years old and brain dead...her body, if cared for can life for who knows how long....most likely she can be sustained for years upon years...Just because her brain damage is getting worse...it doesn't mean that her ability to remain alive has suffered...
So i guess the idea of her being like that for another 40 years or so...FRIGHTENING to be and inhumane to keep someone like that.
Boosh's grandmother i am sure lived her life..died older than 40. So i see it being very different then leaving this woman like this for the next 40 some odd years.

But thank you don..i too will try to respect your beliefs

just a thought...don would you want to spend 40-50 years in the state that she is in?

Not trying to be obnoxious by asking you that...

DO you really think anyone would really want to be sustained like that..In my heart i would have to say NO..I DON'T BELIEVE ANYONE would say..YES>...YES i want everyone to keep me alive like that in the hopes that a miracle might happen

oh i agree there, but i will restate, the feeding tube won't sustain her for long. You said she's breathing on her own. I'm not a doctor, but I would think that the worse the brain gets, she's going to stop breathing, feeding tube or not. All vital organs, like the lungs, are hooked up to the brain right?

well who is to really say or could predict how long that would be. It is a slow process not fast.

So now...knowing her situation and knowing what can happen...would you want your feeding tube removed? Or would you want to stay as she has for well over 15 years?

well, see that's a loaded question to me

i don't look at a feeding tube as life support.

So, yes, I'd want the feeding tube to provide me with the bare necessities.

I would not want life support, nor anything to help me breathe. If I stop breathing or slip into a coma, let me go.

Then I'd let nature play it's course. When God wants me, he'll call me.

and the insurance money he stands to collect is not a bad side effect either

right Don

GIVE HIM THE MONEY WHO CARES!

MY opinion HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MONEY OR WHO OR WHAT

SHE IS BRAIN DEAD
SHE isn't getting better
NEVER WILL get any BETTER

THIS IS NOT A LIFE!

i agree, but you CANNOT starve someone to death, if they go under and you DNR, fine, but no one has the right to speed up the death process, particularly in such a inhumane way

food and water are basic necessities

I agree. Denying someone these basic necessites is cruel and inhumane.

But if nature was allowed to play its course..she would have been dead..she would be dead...man is keeping her alive not nature

i think the fundamental differences in our opinions is how you define life support

i don't see a feeding tube keeping her alive. She is breathing on her own, but as her brain continues to shut down, so will her lungs and other vital organs

that and i would NEVER EVER want to live my life ...even with a feeding tube....

I agree, and I am botheed by it too. I am also bothered by the pictures/video feed of her on tv. I have lost both parents and it freaks me out to see this, I get disgusted a lot seeing the video feed and it reminds me of my parents last days when they slipped into a coma.

I completely agree with you. After all he has moved on and has a new fiance and 2 kids. I read a sad quote from her parents in the paper today. It said' You have your fiance and 2 kids , why won't you just let me have my daughter? It broke my heart.

That would have broke my heart if I was not soo angry that she's using the media and trying to play me.
SOmeone said it right today, it's all politics now.

Re: I think I am the only person who beleives that the Terri Shievo case is just horrible (M)

I was listening to the radio this afternoon and I could swear it was like mental telepathy - I was thinking maybe even if they reinserted the tube at this point - she could still die - and they said because her body has gone without fluid for so long that having the tube reinserted the kidneys might not be able to take the fluids.

If by some way they were granted the power to reinsert the tube, I hope they are prepared for this.

I just hope that morphine is taking any pain she may have away - and I know everyone says she is brain dead and that brain dead cannot feel pain but I guess part of me just doesn't believe that. Anyway I just wish either way the misery of this would all be over I've been in tears a couple of times already.

God Bless !
