I think I am the only person who beleives that the Terri Shievo case is just horrible (M)

I truly do not feel that her husband had the right to make that decision to end her life. I think it is utterly horrible that she is being starved to death.
What does he gain from her death? NOTHING...I just can't imagine watching your child die right in front of you...I know that she doesn't have any brain function, but still, she is being starved to death and I just think that is WRONG!

When you are Catholic- a feeding tube is not considerd life support...
but when removing the feeding tube causes death.....wouldn't the feeding tube then be seen as supporting life, and therefore life support?
not according to the pope. any 'feeding' of any nutrient is not seen as being artificial- just like a baby is fed 'artificially' by his/her parent but cannot put hand to mouth- that is how they see it.

life support and a feeding tube are two completely different thing
a feeding tube DOES NOT keep you alive
well then she will be living now ?
YOU ARE WRONG IN THIS CASE!
When you are Catholic- a feeding tube is not considerd life support...
well then how is it murder when it is taken away?
ANd i guess it doesn't matter it if it the only thing keeping her alive then it is her LIFE SUPPORT!

exactly why I feel it should not have been removed. If she died while the feeding tube was still feeding her then that is nature's will. Removing the tube when she can't feed herself is starving her body- whether she is able to feel it or not.

That is YOUR personal belief. Millions of religious Catholics see otherwise- and some of those Catholics are medical professionals.. It comes down to morals.

Is the pope going to save her life?!!!! Why are you making the 'rules' of the church so stringent here!?
She is living an incomplete life! Would anyone else want to live like that? I wouldn't. And what about the suffering of her family. Everyone is being tortured here....
I have told my FH and he knows, and now all you do to, DO NOt MAKE ME LIVE LIKE THAT!!
I want my family to remember me as a fun, vivacious, intelligent beautiful person, not a shadow of what I was.

Re: I think I am the only person who beleives that the Terri Shievo case is just horrible (M)
1. in the end it isn't about the husband it was about a decision A decision that needed to be made and would have been nice if the parents did that! But they couldn't
SHE IS BRAIN DEAD...she isn't comming out of it and i don't believe the weirdo money hungrey doctors who say that people HAVE come out of being BRAIN DEAD.
2. HELLLLLLLLLLO have anyone ever thought that MAYBE the doctors are the money hungrey jerkoffs who want to use her body for their research?
That they are playing on the family's desperation??????TO GET MONEY!!!
Just because she is brain dead doesn't mean she is not alive....Babies brains aren't fully developed yet, and yet, mothers fight for the lives of their babies whether in utero or in the NICU. Many people have lived for a long time being brain dead. I just don't think it is anyones place to make that decision for you.
If that decision wasn't in writing and notorized by a lawyer, then you should be left alone. There are people who loved her and took care of her. Why should the husband, who obviously ended their marriage have the final decision? It is sick torture!

again POOR ANALOGY... a baby's brain is FUNCTIONING HERS ISN'T...NEVER WILL AGAIN!
and WHO WOULD WANT TO BE THAT WAY...Have their bodies here without a functioning brain...Keeping her alive soe 'loved ones' are happy is WRONG.
AND if you want to go the spiritual route...imo i think it is also sick keeping her soul here trapped in a body on earth....She needs to be in peace...mind, body AND SOUL
FOR CHRISTS SAKE her parents STILL NOW think hse is communicating...that is how OUT THERE THEY ARE....They have LOST IT...And are not capable of making ANY rational decisions

Redhead - it is clear that you and several others would rather die than live as Terry Schiavo has been living and that is totally understandable and I don't think anyone is challenging your personal beliefs but, I think the point you are missing is that they are YOUR beliefs. It does not give you the right to terminate someone else's life because you think they would be better off dead. The same is true in the reverse. Those people who would continue in Terry's state rather than have their feeding tube cut off should not have the right to artificially keep you alive against your wishes right?
The point is, that Terry did not make her wishes known in writing. Therefore, all we have is her husband's word. Someone who has questionable motives at the very least. I would, however, feel the same way if it were her parents arguing this position. Its just not right to 'mercy' kill someone on one person's word unless it is the person whose life is being terminated.
This particularly scares me because I don't agree with you and I would not want to be starved to death if I were Terry Schiavo. I never did a healthcare proxy or a living will because I am the age Terry was when she slipped into this state. The thought that my husband could knock me off so he could go forward with his life with someone else (with $$$ gained at my expense no less) is absolutely terrifying. I know my husband wouldn't do this because he feels the exact same way I do about this but, I feel so sorry for Terry nonetheless.

ANNIE (as per the situation that you described above)....if it was your parents that said...enough is enough...it is time to let her go...
woud you want that? Or would you think THEY are doing something wrong?

Have to say...i question the sanity of her parents and do not think they are able to make a rationale decision either...since they are thinking about how THEY feel..

I hate hearing about this too, beacsue I wish her husband would just give up his guardianship to her parents. But she has 1.3 million dollars from a malpractice suit. This poor women. It is so inhumane

Re: I think I am the only person who beleives that the Terri Shievo case is just horrible (M)
Redhead - Um, I think you are still missing my point. This is Terry's life, the choice to terminate it should be only hers.
I believe life is sacred. God gave me life and he should decide when it is taken away. So, to answer your question, yes, I would live like that, until I died naturally.
I think it is one thing to make your own choice but, to impose a death sentence on someone else doesn't make sense to me. I read in another post how you called it 'disgusting' to keep these people around. I don't understand - who should decide when a person's existence becomes 'disgusting' - should it be a neutral arbiter and not even the person themselves? Should we as a society start killing the disabled, the mentally ill etc. because we don't deem their life worthy of living?

why do you believe the husband has questionable motives? he has been by her side for 15 years and i believe initially had the same 'hope' the parents did for a few years. i think the media circus has tainted the 'facts' and i personally don't buy any of it...
i think the case is horrible and sad but for different reasons than originally stated on this thread. it has spawned great debate in our family and on our way to visit my parents for the holidays DH jokingly stated we were going to visit 'the kevorkians'. DH and i have different views on the topic but both agree we would execute each others wishes.

I TOTALLY agree with you! I think her husband is also a lowlife piece of trash for doing this to her family. He is heartless. I am sure her wishes were not to put her parents through this.
