I think I am the only person who beleives that the Terri Shievo case is just horrible (M)

Original post by WeddingsRock

I truly do not feel that her husband had the right to make that decision to end her life. I think it is utterly horrible that she is being starved to death.

What does he gain from her death? NOTHING...I just can't imagine watching your child die right in front of you...I know that she doesn't have any brain function, but still, she is being starved to death and I just think that is WRONG!

and the insurance money he stands to collect is not a bad side effect either

right Don

GIVE HIM THE MONEY WHO CARES!

MY opinion HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MONEY OR WHO OR WHAT

SHE IS BRAIN DEAD
SHE isn't getting better
NEVER WILL get any BETTER

THIS IS NOT A LIFE!

i agree, but you CANNOT starve someone to death, if they go under and you DNR, fine, but no one has the right to speed up the death process, particularly in such a inhumane way

food and water are basic necessities

Sue..in the end...WHO CARES WHO MAKES THE DECISION...SHE NEEDED TO GO!

IMO the parent aren't mentally capable of making hte right decision either!

SHE IS NOT A PET....she is NOT getting any better...never will and that is the cold hard reality that nobody seems to face
SO the fact the he is making the decision is irrelevant...the decision NEEDED ot be made!

She probably won't get better. BUT, I feel very strongly that she would not want her husband making this decision. I also think that, as a practicing Catholic, she would not have wanted her food and water taken away.

And, I don't believe what her IN-LAWS said about her not wanting life support.

Logically, since she had a good relationship with her parents and sibblings, woudnt' she have told THEM what she wanted? Why the in-laws?

I really believe that she would have wanted her parents to make this decision, to live.

Re: I think I am the only person who beleives that the Terri Shievo case is just horrible (M)

This is such a tough situation and so difficult for all involved, but I feel like a lot of people, and especially the media, have lost the focus and meaning of it all, which is Terry.

She told her husband (and other people, she expressed her wishes to others besides her husband) that she did not want to be artificially kept alive. Those are her wishes. It's not about her parents. It's not about her husband. It's not about religion. It's not about the gov't intervening into the ultimate personal decision. It's about a PERSON.

Whether anyone wants to accept it or not, she is in PVS. She is not going to recover. No one who is PVS can recover to any meaningful cognitive state, anyone who has a story to the contrary doesn't have their facts straight.
She cannot respond meaningfully to any type of stimulus and reportedly that includes not just cognitive, but physical stimuli. She is not experiencing pain, hunger, etc in the way you or I do. She is not being put through a cruel or painful death, that is illegal (and immoral, unethical, etc.)

It is sad, it is tragic, but I wish that this whole debate was actually about the person at the center of it, not her husband's motives, her parents, conservative Christians, the govt, etc... It's about a person and respecting her and her wishes.

i'm not arguing that, but the way they are doing it is wrong, starving someone is wrong

life support and a feeding tube are two completely different thing

a feeding tube DOES NOT keep you alive

well then she will be living now ?

YOU ARE WRONG IN THIS CASE!

i'm confused by the first part of that

If a feeding tube does not keep you alive

well then Terri will live when it is taken out...

DIdn't gt your statement

ANd i think it is really sad that people ANYONE would want her to live her life like that...A SHAME!

Don it isn't painful...she is on SOOO much morphine that she will feel nothing even if she could...WHICH SHE CAN'T

She cannot feel pain! So starvation isn't cruel...the thought of a normal person staving is what sickens people and that isn't this case and people have to understand that!

my point is, all a feeding tube does is provide nourishment

she could still die at any time with or without the tube

There is so much misinformation about her cognitive state and what her experiences are. She is not experiencing pain or hunger in a way a 'normal' healthy person would. She is unfortunately not ever going to recover.

This is about Terry, and no one else. It's about respecting her personal wishes as tough as that is for the people who love her.

In this case the feeding tube is life support because she can't feed herself and cutting off food and liquid is starving her body . . .

I think the money may be playing a roll here and therefore that money should not go to him.

I am sorry, there are so many sides to this story and it is hard to really decide who is wrong. But like Sue, I feel that wedding vows should be taken seriously and that his rights went down the tubes when he went and had 2 kids with another woman. If he wanted to move on so badly, he should have given up his rights.

If this was a woman that was not in a vegatative state but was incapable of functioning as the wife she had once been, whether it be physically or mentally, should he still have been able to move on while still being married? Would people still accept his 'moving on?' does being in a vegetative state warrant going against one's wedding vows? I don't think so

He does not deserve to have any say in what happens to her and no rights to the money (if any exists) either (since we really don't know his motives-no one does)

I am unsure if either side was really capable of making a decision.

BRI...wedding vows, money WHO CARES
SHe is who she is...brain dead..and THAT IMO is the only issue!
ANd people seem to be forgetting that!

The parents are NOW claiming that the morphine that they are giving is too much..

I think it's terrible because the poor woman is in such a state, her husband is trying to do what he thinks is right and he's getting death threats...and these poor parents are watching their child suffer....
This is such a no-win situation...it breaks my heart.
I don't think there's a right answer...and I don't think anyone is more right or wrong than anyone else.....it's just awful

When you are Catholic- a feeding tube is not considerd life support...

The fact is, that only the individual should be able to terminate their own life in that situation.

First of all, assisted suicide is not legal.

Second of all, she's supposedly (or was) a practicing Catholic. Catholics don't believe in suicide.

Do some more research.

I think she may have been referring to a living will here....

but when removing the feeding tube causes death.....wouldn't the feeding tube then be seen as supporting life, and therefore life support?
