just a few things to think about if you want a tented wedding...

i work for a caterer and we go to sites to do weddings. i've done more than one wedding in a tent, and oddly enough, it has POURED every time i've done a tent wedding. and let me tell you- it's not a pretty sight. the grass gets really soggy and all the women sink their high heels into the ground and get them all muddy. also, one time i did a wedding where it was rainy AND windy and the side panels to the tents were blowing in and all the guests were getting wet. it was terrible. so unless you have nerves of steel and will not be stressed about the weather, i don't recommend it. it can be absolutely gorgeous if you luck out and get a nice day, but if you don't, you're not going to be a happy camper.

But like I said above, I'd definitely use plywood flooring thoughout... not just for the dancefloor.

Come to think of it... it might even be possible to have the tent company extend the floors to create a path to the estate (or whatever) so that we wouldn't have to worry trekking across the grass.

As far as the wind... from what I've seen on the NY Tent Co's website... the tents suitable for large weddings are wind (and rain) proof. They're SUPER sturdy... some 'Navi-Trac System'. Were the tents you've seen large? Let me know if so.

But I don't have nerves of steel so we'll see how it all pans out. If I'm not 100% confident in the tent, I won't do it.

I'll let you all know what the result is when I speak with all the different companies.

It's funny because when you think of a 'wedding in a tent' it doesn't sound very 'romantic' nor 'extravagant' at all but I'm beginning to realize now that it might be a wee bit too romantic and extravagant for my budget

I'll let you all know what FH thinks when I speak to him... he's the one with the job. I'm just a poor college student with dreams

Well see... I'm not the outdoorsy type at all. I just love the atmosphere that the tents create... does that make any sense? lol

If we have an outdoor wedding then I'd be WAY too concerned about weather. Plus, I hate walking on grass... weird but I do.
I'm a big punk lol.

You know what.. I might just use the pillow-like roof liners used in tents, have it attached to the ceiling of a ballroom... use custom lighting and just create the atmosphere I'm looking for that way!

That might be the solution if the tent thing is too expensive.

That's part of my concern. Even though there are lots of country clubs, vineyards, mansions and estates in the area, I'm unsure of how much they'd charge to use their grounds and to cater.

I'll be making lots of calls this week

I think I have heard that tented weddings are much more expensive...but I think if you want to do it....
Go for it!!!

However, I agree with the weather comment (I would be terrified) AND by ordering a dance floor to cover the whole area you are looking at major $$$$$$.

I second the bridgeview yacht club idea. Their ballroom is gorgeous...has the pillow tented ceilings already and is reasonably priced!!

...and ya it probably will cost a lot more to have the ground completely covered with plywood

I initially wanted a tented wedding.

I was going to do a small tent for the ceremony and a large tent for the wedding. But that was insanely expensive. So I decided on a ceremony tent - just 4 poles and a top and a large tent. Still to expensive.

My final quote was for a tent that would hold 10 tables with 8-10 people per table and a dance floor that would hold 40-50 people. There had to be enough room for a bar and a 'buffet'.

The cost was about 8000 with the liner. If you are having more than my 75 people, the cost will be even higher. That was without tables and chairs. That was BEFORE I asked them to put down flooring.

I was going to do it at my house, but the best price I could get pp for catering was $140/pp - including all liquor, soda and cocktail hour, food and staff. It wasn't bad. I considered doing a tent at a place, but on top of paying for the tent I had to pay a site fee of 2000-7000.

I ultimately couldn't afford it.

BUT it is gorgeous and unique and if you have the money I would say to ABSOLUTELY go for it.
