I wasnt going to post this, but I need to (long)

On Tuesday night DH and I learned that Emary had a very very severe case of Round Worms and Tape Worms which NSAL failed to inform us of when we adopted her (Yes, they knew about it....they checked her medical records and they had it on file but never informed us). We have another dog in the house who may have been exposed to it AND worse, round worm is contagious to humans if the dog licks your mouth. Well....the dog had been licking my mouth ALL week long. DH tried so hard not to be grossed out by it, but he literally couldnt even touch the dog for the past 2 days. This might be TMI, but she literally had worms falling out of her butt onto our floor yesterday. Her Kennel cough had gotten worse since we brought her home and she started peeing on the floor out of spite. We called our vet and he suggested I go to my doctor to be checked for round worm. He also told us to keep her far away from the other dog.

Last night when DH came home we had a long talk and he said that if he had known she had parasites we would never have taken her home. We love her to death but for some reason, this is just one of those things where it makes you not want to even touch the dog -- and you cannot have a puppy that you cant touch... she can sense the change in us. The vet said it would last at least another week or two before everything was completely taken care of.

We took her back to NSAL last night. We both cried so much and feel SO horrible. Its been an emotional roller coaster and I absolutely hate myself for having to take her back. Not to mention, we got attached to her and now we feel like we never want to adopt another dog for fear of something like this happeneing again. I've always hated people who adopt and then return dogs, thinking they dont care about the dogs....but we DO care. We love her soooo much, but we also know that with the worms and kennel cough, and the amount we're at work, we cant give her the attention and care she needs. She needs to be carefully watched constantly -- the kennel cough is turning into pneumonia and she could get very sick. DH is heart-broken right now, but more than anything he is SO mad at NSAL for not disclosing the fact that she had such a severe case of worms. Like I said, had they told us, we wouldnt have adopted her....which would have saved her and us from this whole experience. I know someone else will adopt her soon -- she's just too cute not to. But I cant help having such a sick, terrible feeling. We cried for HOURS yesterday and came home to an empty crate with her toys on the floor. I hate to close up the crate and move it into the closet -- I couldnt even look at it without crying.

The fact is, they would have a lot less animals returned to them if they were truthful from the beginning with the families that come in to adopt.

OR, if the 'family' that came to adopt them realized that an animal is not something that can just be returned...... Please STOP trying to justify what you did......

I really dont think its anyone else's business to JUDGE what we did. You dont know our financial situation nor our living situation, so you DONT know whether or not it would have actually been possible for us to care for her properly due to her health. I couldve done what many people do and opened the front door and jet let it loose. I didnt do that. I also didnt kill the dog. I had it for 5 DAYS. It wasnt long enough for it to get attached dispite what you may think. I brought her back to a place that could take her in and re-adopt her to another family. Sorry, but I disagree with you -- its better to return the dog than to have it live with a family that cant care for it properly. The fact that you waste your time and effort lecturing someone who returned a dog is pathetic. Like I said, others could have just left it outside to wander away and fend for itself -- we didnt do that. Oh, and for the record....dogs are not people. They're dogs. Its not the same as adopting a baby, so dont bother pulling that line, its absolutely rediculous.

Oh, and btw: If YOU adopted a dog from an organization that had a parasite that was contagious and you learned that not only were you never informed of it, but you also contracted it from the dog....you'd probably have quite a problem on your hands too. I now have a living parasite in me which I'm being medicated for because of an organization that failed to inform someone of a SERIOUS problem. Sorry, but round worm is not a joke when it infects humans and a puppy I owned for 5 days isnt worth mine and my husband's health.

I am so sorry to hear that.

I know when I got my dog 6 yrs ago, she had worms. It was awful, and yes I had to stay on top of her....there were worms coming out of her, even when she wasnt going to the bathroom.

It was such a mess. I totally understand your reasoning for giving him back. It must of been extremely difficult.

And I am so so sorry that you ended up with it yourself. I would make a HUGE complaint.

You were faced with a difficult decision and you made the choice that you felt was right for you and your family. That is sort of where it ends. It's not for others to judge or to act like there was an obviously better choice for you. It is difficult , and I imagine those who act like it isn't are not speaking from experience or are not being honest with themselves. I love my dog as much as any other member of my family, but we have bonded over 2 years, not five minutes. I cant say I know what I would have done in your situation, but I can say your reaction was totally understandable and it seems like you did what you thought was right, for you, your husband and the dog. The tough choices in life never have a clear answer.

I really think you people need to get off her back.
This was her and her DH's unfortunate situation and I think it's hideous that you are attacking their choice. They did what was best for there family. Try to be sympathetic and less judgemental. No one knows what they would do unless faced with the same problem.

What's that saying.........before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes that way if they get angry, they'll be a mile away - and barefoot.

Well since this is a PUBLIC message board, I will say what I want, thanks

I think what she did was irresponsible, and I am standing by that...sorry you do not agree.

:

UM, I never compared the dog to a baby so direct that comment elsewhere please....and I am not wasting my time. I think this is a valuable cause, maybe you will THINK before you adopt another dog, there is always a chance there will be a problem that you may encounter down the line

as I said before...PLEASE do not adopt another dog.....

So sorry that you guys got caught in this situation! I know it can be tough!

I don't know what I would have done either with this situation. Every pet owner is different with their pets and who are we to judge what is acceptable or not for that family. JMO.

were you notified of them before you got your dog? Did you have another animal in the house who was at risk of catching them? Did you get them from the dog?

If not, then sorry, your situation isnt the same and therefore, you really cant judge based on 'walking in my shoes'

I have a question, if you do not care what we think, WHY do you keep trying to justify what you did?

You did it, it is over with, let it go and move on

No more threads on this topic are necessary, it is over and done with. I just jope you have learned something from this experience.

Wow....thanks mom!
If you had taken the time to read through this entire thread you would have noticed that I wrote much earlier on that DH and I learned an important lesson from this experience. However, my responses werent to justify my actions -- they were to defend myself from being personally attacked by people who know nothing about me or my husband.

I think I've figured it out.... From the first day you got the dog you complained it was hard to housebreak it it was hard to train it it kept jumping... I guess this was the 'easy' way out

If you did not have the money to care for a dogs medical needs you had no right to adopt it in the first place.

Jenn - I'm so sorry that you and your husband had to go through this. You made a really difficult decision and I'm sure that I would have done the same if I was in your situation.

I'm sorry that you had to deal with all of the cattiness on this board too. I understand if you don't agree with what she did, but there's no need to personally bash her.
