On Tuesday night DH and I learned that Emary had a very very severe case of Round Worms and Tape Worms which NSAL failed to inform us of when we adopted her (Yes, they knew about it....they checked her medical records and they had it on file but never informed us). We have another dog in the house who may have been exposed to it AND worse, round worm is contagious to humans if the dog licks your mouth. Well....the dog had been licking my mouth ALL week long. DH tried so hard not to be grossed out by it, but he literally couldnt even touch the dog for the past 2 days. This might be TMI, but she literally had worms falling out of her butt onto our floor yesterday. Her Kennel cough had gotten worse since we brought her home and she started peeing on the floor out of spite. We called our vet and he suggested I go to my doctor to be checked for round worm. He also told us to keep her far away from the other dog.
Last night when DH came home we had a long talk and he said that if he had known she had parasites we would never have taken her home. We love her to death but for some reason, this is just one of those things where it makes you not want to even touch the dog -- and you cannot have a puppy that you cant touch... she can sense the change in us. The vet said it would last at least another week or two before everything was completely taken care of.
We took her back to NSAL last night. We both cried so much and feel SO horrible. Its been an emotional roller coaster and I absolutely hate myself for having to take her back. Not to mention, we got attached to her and now we feel like we never want to adopt another dog for fear of something like this happeneing again. I've always hated people who adopt and then return dogs, thinking they dont care about the dogs....but we DO care. We love her soooo much, but we also know that with the worms and kennel cough, and the amount we're at work, we cant give her the attention and care she needs. She needs to be carefully watched constantly -- the kennel cough is turning into pneumonia and she could get very sick. DH is heart-broken right now, but more than anything he is SO mad at NSAL for not disclosing the fact that she had such a severe case of worms. Like I said, had they told us, we wouldnt have adopted her....which would have saved her and us from this whole experience. I know someone else will adopt her soon -- she's just too cute not to. But I cant help having such a sick, terrible feeling. We cried for HOURS yesterday and came home to an empty crate with her toys on the floor. I hate to close up the crate and move it into the closet -- I couldnt even look at it without crying.

Kind of like when my dog pawed his way into my closet took an old pocketbook and got my tide to go stick and drank all of the liquid out of it

The fact is, they would have a lot less animals returned to them if they were truthful from the beginning with the families that come in to adopt.
OR, if the 'family' that came to adopt them realized that an animal is not something that can just be returned...... Please STOP trying to justify what you did......
I really dont think its anyone else's business to JUDGE what we did. You dont know our financial situation nor our living situation, so you DONT know whether or not it would have actually been possible for us to care for her properly due to her health. I couldve done what many people do and opened the front door and jet let it loose. I didnt do that. I also didnt kill the dog. I had it for 5 DAYS. It wasnt long enough for it to get attached dispite what you may think. I brought her back to a place that could take her in and re-adopt her to another family. Sorry, but I disagree with you -- its better to return the dog than to have it live with a family that cant care for it properly. The fact that you waste your time and effort lecturing someone who returned a dog is pathetic. Like I said, others could have just left it outside to wander away and fend for itself -- we didnt do that. Oh, and for the record....dogs are not people. They're dogs. Its not the same as adopting a baby, so dont bother pulling that line, its absolutely rediculous.
Oh, and btw: If YOU adopted a dog from an organization that had a parasite that was contagious and you learned that not only were you never informed of it, but you also contracted it from the dog....you'd probably have quite a problem on your hands too. I now have a living parasite in me which I'm being medicated for because of an organization that failed to inform someone of a SERIOUS problem. Sorry, but round worm is not a joke when it infects humans and a puppy I owned for 5 days isnt worth mine and my husband's health.
If you did not have the money to care for a dogs medical needs you had no right to adopt it in the first place.
that is what a responsible person would think right?
I adopted a dog a year ago July. The first night home she had trouble breathing, I took her to the vet the next and it wound up she had Pneumonia. She need to stay in the hospital for 7 days in order to get better, it cost me $1700. But because the day I signed that paper I promised to take care of that dog I was going to do anything in my power to see she had a good life.
And at the time I had just purchased a house and could not really afford the bills, but I found a way.

I am not bashing you, and I am not even saying to never adopt a dog again. But I am just trying to point out that before you get a dog again, just make sure you are in a better position to take care of it. Dogs are a life long commitment and they do cost a lot of money to take care of.

This is what I was TRYING to say but I did not get that accross...well said
But I do not think she should adopt another dog unless and until she realizes what a commitement it is.

She would just Vomit. It only has peroxide in it
And actually my dog is 70 pounds so it didn't even affect him so unless she weighs less she would be ok.

I really think you people need to get off her back. This was her and her DH's unfortunate situation and I think it's hideous that you are attacking their choice. They did what was best for there family. Try to be sympathetic and less judgemental. No one knows what they would do unless faced with the same problem.
Well since this is a PUBLIC message board, I will say what I want, thanks
I think what she did was irresponsible, and I am standing by that...sorry you do not agree.
It is perfectly fine for you to state your opinions. Thankfully we live in a time and place where we can do that. The fact is they did what they thought was best for her and her family. I love animals just as much as the next person but people must come first. It's a s ucky situation so matter which way you slice it. Both the animal and the family lost in this one.

One of the biggest benefits of an open forum like this is EDUCATION! In this case, it's about educating the original poster as well as others. Dogs (and cats) are a huge commitment. I mean HUGE!!! Anyone - including the OP - should be aware of this and that is why so many of us are so adamant about her behaviour. There are quite a few of us who have adopted dogs and then had expensive medical problems afterwards - we didn't give the dog back or 'let it run loose' ( which by the way is the MOST irresponsible reply I've ever heard). My dog ate a tiny bottle of Gorilla Glue a couple months after we got her and it cost us $5000 to have her operated on - we took out a loan and paid it off. As I said earlier, my mom took in a dog and it had worms and kennel cough and she just kept it away from her other animals until it was healed. The OP claims that she was in this horrible situation, but that's not so - she just opted out of keeping the dog and taking care of it. If we who protest this can get ONE person to think twice before they take in a dog - wether it be about the financial responsibility or emotional then all this 'drama' will have paid off.
For those of you defending her - think twice about what you would really have done if you were in the same situation. I bet most would not have taken the puppy back and would have gotten the puppy healed.

I agree, these boards do serve to educate, and I have myself learned a lot about animals, rescues, pet stores, puppy mills, etc. from you girls for which I am grateful. Maybe you guys just need to think about the way you deliver your message. Not everyone is as passionate as you, and so now instead of discussing the real issues at hand, everyone is going back and forth passign judgments on this poor girl and bashing her. Generally people are more willing to listen and learn when the tone in which things are presented is not so inciteful.

I have to agree. Bashing is never the way to get a message across (listen up presidential candidates!). It's hard to hear the message when it is presented that way. I think the OP has suffered enough because of her decision.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I think some people are being down right mean to her about this. I think, by her original post this was a very, very difficult decision to make.
Her and her DH were trying to do the right thing by adopting a shelter dog - so cut them some slack. Although I don't agree with returning the dog , I can understand why they did.
Hopefully NSAL will work with you to re-adopt the dog after the dog is treated. I can't imagine why they would be so difficult with you.
