an E-party. FH and I were engaged back in December, and my parents told me not to have an e party because it is greedy, and you are asking too much of the guests, and as much as I agreed at the time, I wish we had had one. I don't know, maybe it is because it is so far away that we are getting married, and no one seems to care right now because it's so far off. But I just wish we had one

If you want to have one, than I think you should. We didn't have ours until about 6 months after we got engaged because we wanted it to be nice out. I don't find them to be greedy at all. I think it's a great way to have the families and bridal party meet for the first time.

I think it's too late. My mom had a brunch for FH's parents and his sister, and my immediate family. But is was sooooooooo not in celebration of us, it was more an atmosphere of his family being weird, and mine ignoring them because they're weird. Put it this way, FH's family knew they were coming for brunch, and when they got there (an hour late!), they declined the food because they 'Just ate before they left!' Um, hello!? Sorry, I went off on a tangent. I just feel like people are going to be like, yeah, we know you're getting married, woo hoo. No one is excited for us, and I think that is the problem. They just have the attitude of why be excited now when we'll just be excited again later?

Did you celebrate with your friends? We also didn't have a formal engagement party, but we did a combination of housewarming/engagement party with our friends... Perhaps its an idea to play with...

Do you have a house, maybe have everyone over for a nice BBQ. Or maybe 4th of July weekend have a nice celebration for the love you and FH have.
What about a nice diner at a restaurant and it being you, FH, family and close friends.
If its something you want, go for it.

It seems like any time someone tried to celebrate our engagement, something went wrong. Our friends were psyched and our bestfriend put together a dinner for all of our friends at a nice restaurant, but then a huge fight broke out between all of them because some of them did not think it was right that the others wanted to split the bill 10 ways when they didn't eat as much as the other people, blah, blah, and so FH and I paid for our dinners PLUS the difference that other people were stiffing, THEN we were supposed to go out right after to a bar, and everyone was fighting and it ended up just being FH and I and our bestfriend who was so drunk we had to carry him into the car and drive him home I think a bbq is a nice idea, but since we live in MA for now, it's not possible, well, maybe we can use FIL's for that. I don't know, I just wanted some sort of a fun celebration since my mother cried for three weeks after I got engaged because she thought it meant she was old, and FILs just didn't seem to care.

We were engaged in November and plan to have a small brunch soon (around July) to celebrate and have all the family members meet, etc.
We are only thinking like 25-30 people, close family and very close friends.

Rachel I can totally relate! No one seemed to care when we got engaged. My parents were just like, 'ok good for you' and his parents didn't care that much b/c his sister just got engaged as well. I am really hoping that we will have an e-party though. My parents didn't want to throw one b/c they live in FL and are coming up here in a week and thought that was too short notice to throw one (and it is). My mom made mention about having one next May, which would be fine, but my dad doesn't really want to have one at all. I will feel cheated b/c we just went to an e-party for a friend who is getting married August 04 and FH's sister had a big e-party. I want someone to throw one for me too! We were thinking of having our own little party with a few friends but we don't know if we will have enough money to cater it even if it is at my apartment. Sorry for the vent. I just wanted to let you know I know how you feel.

i didn't have an engagement party either. i wanted one but fmil said not to because she would rather see the money go towards the wedding and furniture. i think this summer we'lll have a bbq in the backyard to celebrate with family and close friends.

I wanted one this summer, but my mom's friends have already given me engagement gifts, so my mom thinks it is rude to have a party because people will think they should bring something and some already did. FH and I may organize a BBQ and make sure that someone raises a glass to us.

all this talk about engagement parties and now I really want one! I told my fiance that I want to use his parents backyard and throw a BBQ party with our friends for ourselves!!!
