Ideas Please!!

Ideas Please!!

OK. So I have mentioned this in a few posts today. I am getting a lot of kick back from our families over religion. I am Jewish, he is Catholic. We are not religious at all, I would say we are traditional in that I like the symbolism of the traditions. He enjoys the traditions of getting together and having a good time around the holidays. But that is it! My family is very religious, but they have accepted the fact that the only Jewish traditions I will have at the wedding will be breaking of the glass, under a chuppa, and possibly the horah. FH is all about it, anything I want he will do. Now we find out his mother told him that for every Jewish tradition we have to incorporate a Catholic tradition. I said okay, what traditions are there that are symbolic? He cannot think of any. So I told him, 'Let's ask your mom what she would like us to do' his response was that she does not work that way. We need to figure it out or she will hold it against us. He said she will flat out tell us she doesn't want anything and then turn around and hate me for not figuring something out. ***!!

Please Help! Do you know of any traditions we can try to incorporate into the ceremony or at the reception.

There is not much - but when I went to a Jewish and Catholic wedding they always had both a priest and rabbi present. He should go talk to his family priest and I am sure he can suggest something things.

Just came to me what about lighting a unity candle?

The only thing I can think of is a unity candle, which is not part of the Catholic tradition but something that's become popular. But it's certainly something you can include and have the moms each light one of the tapers.

Maybe you can include a prayer in your ceremony, or have somebody read the Corinthians verse that's very popular ('Love is patient, love is kind...'). Even though it's identified as a Christian verse, the words and meaning behind it are not.

There's not much... I agree with the unity candle, although it's not necessarily a catholic tradition. Not sure what you're doing for officiants but maybe have a rabbi and a priest/pastor. You could also do a New Testament reading.

Only things I could come up with other than having a priest and a rabbi is unity candle ceremony and pre canna but no one sees that and I don't think u can do it.

What about having a Prayer of the Faithful. There are a couple of versions so I'm sure you make it not so religious. Also you can play Ave Marie at some point during the ceremony. It's a religious song but it's beautiful.

What about including the prayer of the faithful, or the liturgy of the eucharist, or read first Corinthians 13

Thanks everyone! I will bring all of this back to FH and see what he wants to do.

I say that he should talk to her about what they would like to do since you are Jewish. I am catholic & FH is Jewish & neither of us are very religious so we will keep the ceremony simple & have a general 'God' mentioned. He would like to break the glass & we are also doing the Unity candle but that is it. I don't think that is very fair of her. How should you know what traditions the catholic religion has?

I am catholic and FH is jewish... We are breaking the glass and having a chuppah. and a Rabbi. i like the idea of having a basket of Yamaka's since a lot of the guests are jewish. But we are doing our own vows and not really incorporating any other religious aspects into the day..

Did you post your question under the newlywed section. You cannot be the first Catholic/Jewish couple to be married. See if any of those girls had the same problem and or have any ideas

Good luck!

What about a reading from the bible? Catholic ceremonies in church generally have at least 2 readers. Maybe ask his godparents to read? You can pick the verses so they are appropriate for the interfaith ceremony.

Is your husband latino/hispanic or irish because each culture may do things differently at their catholic ceremony like arras, lazo, etc.
