If you and your SO were wealthy...

If you and your SO were wealthy...

...not talking ridiculously celebrity wealthy...but more than comfortable. Able to afford nice clothes, great car, beautiful house, etc....

....where would your priorities lie? Do you think your life would change significantly from the way it is now? What would you spend your money on?

I don't think I would seriously change much. I just went window shopping on my lunch break and I saw some lovely things that I felt were just too expensive, and it got me thinking if I had the money, would I still pass them up because I didn't think they were worth it? Or would I buy it?

I think two things would change- we would hopefully be homeowners (condo, coop, whatever), and we would travel a lot more. I don't think it would change that much, we are misers at heart.

i probably still would shop in marshalls and in tj maxx and homegoods.

i can not fathom spending $2,000 on a skirt or anything of the sort.

however, id probably buymore pieces from Louis Vuitton, travel more often, and have a decorator from Ethan Allen go absolutely nuts on my home !!!!!!!!!!!!

We would definitely be home owners and we and our parents would be traveling a lot more!

I would finally get a horse. Other than that, I would continue to shop sales and off-price stores.

I think when you grow up a certain way (on a budget) you tend to continue that way even after you make more money.

I think if I grew up with a certain lifestyle, I might be different, though.

We would probably do a lot more travelling and would drive nicer cars. Oh, and we would have a new deck!

I wonder if it's just a girl thing...see I actually posted this because my husband's twin brother and his wife are pretty well off and lately it's been emerging more and more just how well off they really are. According to my DH, they're at the point where 80% of their clothing is designer. Obviously my DH and his brother grew up in the same household...one where you reused the tin foil and wrapping paper and squeezed every last drop at of the toothpaste tube, yet BIL seems to have had no trouble adapting to his 'new' lifestyle!

I might spend a little more on clothing, but the big change would be in the way that I spend my free time. Competing in ballroom dance is so expensive (as are lessons) and I'd definitely take that up again if I had the money to do it.

I was just talking to FH about this. We both would love to have a 'family car' for the winter - some kind of 4 wheel drive SUV for snowy days and long trips (we both have and need small cars for work - which I love except when it snows!)

We will also be moving into our new house soon. If I had the money I would love to buy lots of Ethan Allen/Pottery Barn/Domain/Fortunoffs furniture, put on a deck and put up a fence! Damn neighbors are too close for comfort For now we will jsut be buying the furniture basics.

How is BIL's wife (I guess she is considered yur SIL) Was her family well off as she grew up?

DH and his family grew up in communist Poland and now BIL is making $200K+ a year and even though they go on nice vacations throughout the year, BIL still runs around the house turning off lights in rooms with no one in them and they don't let the faucets run while doing things in the kitchen.

Re: If you and your SO were wealthy...

I have a nice car and we bought a beautiful home in a ncie area...HOWEVER I havent been able to SHOP like I want to and I am NOT talking louis V every week either...last night fh actually told me to go buy something for myself to wear cause all i have been doing is complaining...with car, wedding, and house money is strapped...so YES i would do stuff differently... (We have a great home but I would probably have bought a bigger one with a pool) I would shop more often and the feeling of not having to worry about saving would be Benefit enough! I would travel more too!

I think that we would have a few of the things that we want... a house, a car and we both love to shop, but part of my love is finding the Kenneth Cole jacket that was originally $200 for $30. I do think that we would travel more.

My priorities would lie in what I'd do with my spare time. I'd hire a cleaning lady to keep the house clean, and a gardener, and anyone else that could help out with all those mundane things that get you bogged down and rob you of quality time with your family.

As for how I/we'd spend the money - DH would be off racing whatever car was his obsession at the moment (he loves to race) and I'd be spending time at the spa getting facials and massages (I have the worst muscle tension), and I'd hire a personal shopper to help me find some clothes that look decent on me!
I'd also have the most incredible gourmet kitchen which I'd get a LOT of use out of, and we'd travel all over.......

I would definitely take more trips, especially to different countries. Probably the only other thing is maybe I would buy more clothes (ever since I lost 30 lbs, I never replenished my wardrobe), and I would try to decorate our home more with art. Oh, and I guess I would want one of those 5-10 lb dogs that can fit in a purse, and I would buy her doggies sweaters and rhinestone collars. I'm a sucker for spoiling my animals!

I already live like I am much wealthier then I am-

I would just upgrade everything and buy a vacation house

and maybe NOT WORK

i would also probably go back to school and pursue a masters and phD in ecology or plant physiology. not really a high paying job - but if I was rich I would love to get back into it!

i would also love to have a personal trainer

Re: If you and your SO were wealthy...

I don't think I'd look for expensive stuff, but I wouldn't stop myself from buying something I liked & I wouldn't feel the need to scavenge Loehmann's for a dress to wear to a wedding, then wait for it to go on clearence. Bargain shopping is time consuming.

I'd spend more on the things that were well made, but I'd try not to be wasteful.

I'd buy a house & go on more extravagent vacations.
