If you could be a SAHM, would you?

Original post by cocoa

i was talking with dh and i admitted that even if we were financially sound, i would still want to work. or at least volunteer and treat it like a job. i feel like i will sound horrible and that i don't want to be a mom, but i think that with the way the world is, i mean, it isn't the 50's anymore, i think that a woman should have something else besides her house and taking care of it and that heaven forbid something happens, she has a way to survive.

i feel like i will be so flamed for saying this, but even if we had the $, i'd think i'd want to be something as well. is that horrible?

Re: If you could be a SAHM, would you?

Honeestly...i would love to be a SAHM - BUT only for those years before they go to Kindergarden....my mom was divorced and she worked her arse off for us...and i always felt so sad when i was in girl scouts and everyone's mom's were with us and my mom did not know even what to send me off with to go camping...and i would get really upset with her...but as i have grown up and as i have grown up to respect her for the person she has made me...i don't know.....

My mom was a nurse and got to take off three or four years and got to go back (before she got divorce) and i am not a teacher or nurse...

I work my arse off and i have made something of myself in the corporate world and now i am in the position to start having kids...and i will have kids...but i am going to feel so guilty about wanting to go back to work and leaving my kids and the fact that my husband makes enough money for the both of us to raise a family makes in it in a weird world worse. I so respect woman who want to be a SAHM...but while i feel that i will have so much happiness from having a children,.,i need that little bit for me...and for me that means working...and at times i feel so GUILTY about it all...

I just feel that if you are not a teacher or a nurse that you cannot just resume your job position after a few years off. I see woman now applying for jobs who raised their kids and took a few years off who just don't have the computer experience...and even if they keep studying while they are at home...i just don't feel that they have the expeirence.......the corporate world ***** for parents to be......and i can only think that the women on these boards who are where i am can undertand that....it *****....

My answer to your question is no doubt about it

i would love to SAH until my kids started school full-time, but that probably will not happen due to finances. i do not look forward to putting my kids in day care while they are still toddlers and then coming home from a long, tough day at work to cook, clean, and care for my family. i honestly do not know how my mother did it.

100% yes (although that's not an option for me). I wouldn't feel badly for not using my professional degree - I'd still have that experience and knowledge.
