It's not a will of your possessions, it's a written documented with your wishes stating if you wanted to be kept a live through any means necessary or if you want no assistance.

Re: If you don't have a living will
Go to your local hospital, and go to the social work department to get forms for advanced directives (health care proxies, etc.)they will help you...

Excellent point!
Should you have two copies though, one on you and one with your dh/in a bank or somewhere?

Re: If you don't have a living will
There is no good reason why I don't have one -- just laziness. I've been thinking about doing it for years -- even more so now that I'm married and seeing the Schiavo case still in the news ...

Absolutely!
I interned in a few hospitals (for social work), and for my law degree I focused on elder law and these issues regarding advanced directives are so critical!

Be sure to have your wishes expressed on paper, and have those discussions with your family, let them know what you want in case such and such happens, etc...but definately have it on paper...specifically food and hydration issues...in NY State, if you don't want artificial food/hydration, it has to be expressly written in your advanced directive..not enough to say, 'no extreme measures'.

Me too. I know we should get one. But just always say I'll do it later. DH knows how I feel about it though. I KNOW, that isn't good enough, but at least talking about it is a (small) start.

Re: If you don't have a living will
I don't have one.but I told my husband last night, no offense, but if something happens to me and I'm in the hospital I want my mom to make the decisions OK?
I just feel if my mom outlives me- she should have ultimate decision since I CAME from her... just my thought.
