If you receive a check as a gift before the wedding, can you cash it before the wedding?

It's from my mom's cousin, who can't make it to the wedding. They sent a very generous gift of $150, but my mom isn't sure if proper etiquette is to wait until after the wedding to cash it? I could really use that money for tip $$! What do I do?

Also, I send a thank you now AND the picture thank you later, too, right?

I would say no to this but what do I know - my wedding hasn't passed yet

We've received a few checks so far and yes we cashed them and we are going to send a thank you now...no picture later. If you want to send them a picture thank you - I'd wait and send it then. They'll understand you plan to do them all at once. But I would never send 2 thank you's - but that's just me.

Yes, you can cash it now! People would rather have their bank accounts up to date than worry about whether the wedding has passed or not.

I'd also send just one thank-you...

Its really up to you. But I would wait until after the wedding to cash it.

Etiquette tells me you should wait but as a gift giver, I hate when people take forever to cash my checks. Eek! I don't know!

I would think, if they didnt want you to cash it now, they wouldnt have sent it yet. I say Cash it NOW!!!

I am not sure how to answer the cash it now or later question, but as far as thank yous are concerned here is my opinion:

If you want to send a thank you picture card (which I would suggest doing since she gave a nice gift), then don't send a thank you card now, but instead call and thank them. I think that is much more personal and the phone call won't take long, and I am sure the people will appreciate the time you took to call.

Yes, cash it.
I hate when my checkbook isnt balanced when someone holds a check. I am always scared they didnt get it in the mail. And send the TY along with everyone else's.

I never thought about this! I say, cash it now, thank you later. Is it someone you talk to regularly? If so, you can call and thank them now, send one later.

i would cash it now-- if they were so cagey about when their check was to be cashed then they would have sent it so that it would arrive on the wedding day or just before/after.

i'm sure they would pretty much expect you to cash it when you get it.
