If you receive a check as a gift before the wedding, can you cash it before the wedding?
Original post by sarahradio5
It's from my mom's cousin, who can't make it to the wedding. They sent a very generous gift of $150, but my mom isn't sure if proper etiquette is to wait until after the wedding to cash it? I could really use that money for tip $$! What do I do?
Also, I send a thank you now AND the picture thank you later, too, right?
TIA!

If you could use it towards paying off some bills then i say cash it but don't forget to send a thank you card.. if you don't need the money right away I say wait

I waited... I didn't feel it was right to cash a wedding gift before the wedding.
If you received any tangible gifts off of your registry before the wedding then did you wait until after the wedding to use them?

I know the answer!
You are supposed to cash it now - provided that you send a thank you card just before you cash it or around the same day. Don't wait for your regular picture Thank You cards. You can also send a picture Thank you if you want but it's not necesssary.
I read this somewhere but I cannot recall exactly where right now.
The reason - when people send you a gift, they're actually giving you the gift at the moment that they send it...no strings attached.

i would cash it now-- if they were so cagey about when their check was to be cashed then they would have sent it so that it would arrive on the wedding day or just before/after.
i'm sure they would pretty much expect you to cash it when you get it.
I completely agree
