So, Britney bought her own e-ring. I feel like it is the sentiment behind the ring that is important, and even if I had a tiny stone (or none) it's the feelings that matter. But, if you were Britney, knowing your ring would be all over the magazines, would you buy your own huge rock?

I could never buy my own e-ring, if it didn't come from my Dh it wouldn't be the same.

Did everyone's DH/FH pay cash for thier ring? If he put some or all of it on a credit card...then once you are married, you are paying for your own ring.

the first time I was engaged, I was NOT rich!
I was making $14k a year and living on my own.
I bought my own diamond for my ring. He bought the band ($300). I paid to have my diamond mounted onto the band.
Honestly it was very unique and very striking, I still love the band and sometimes wish I could purchase it.
After I broke off the engagement I had him return the ring, of course. We didn't even last the 180days allowed to return engagement rings!! hah!
So, yah, I'd buy my own ring definately. What's the difference from buying it versus saying 'Jim, I want that ring for my engagement ring?'
Jim selected, created and paid for my e-ring which is again very unique and strikingly different from most e-rings. I love him, not the ring. I love our marriage, not the band that he gave me that day.
Heck a string would have been as good as a 7 carat diamond (which a friend of mine had).
If I had the money..... I'd still want this e-ring!!!!

I absolutely would not. It wold defeat the entire purpose. If I were a millionaire I'd still appreciate the sentiment, thought and sacrfice that went into FH buying me this ring much more than anything money could buy.

Who cares? People do what works for them. If it worked out better for me to buy my own ring, I would. I don't see the big deal. The point is that it's a symbol of the commitment, why does it matter who pays for it? I did not pay for my own, but if I had to, I would have.

Never. I just love how DH got soooooo into the whole process, while I had absolutely no clue. That he took weeks, and weeks, and weeks, to visit every jeweler close to where he works, and kept looking until he found the setting that he thought fit my style exactly. He knows more about diamonds now than I do to tell them and what to look for).
I LOVE it, and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world, including a bigger, more expensive ring.

i think i would. if youre in love and wanting to get married anyway, i think my DH would want me too. he'd pick one out for me and id pick up the tab! like someone said, its all going to be both of your money anyway.

no. in fact, i told dh he didn't need to get me one if he couldn't afford it b/c all i wanted was to be married to him, not have a ring. i got a ring and i love it and it is more than i would have ever expected, but it could only come from him.

No, I would want it to come from my DH. The only way I would buy my own is if he really couldn't afford it. I didn't even help Brad pick my ring out..he did it on his own, and I was really happy he did it that way.

First I want to say that I think everyone does what is best for their situation and there is nothing wrong with that.
My DH picked out my ring and it is EXACTLY what I would have wanted. He did not pay cash for my ring. It went on a credit card that he finished paying off shortly after we were married. Since we kept seperate accts & have a joint acct for our joint bills he paid it with HIS $$$.

I'm not sure if Kevin brought her a smaller ring, but he most certainly could've. Despite the fact the he looks like a total scrub, he's a lot more well off than he seems. He might've gotten her a small one, but like you said, I'm sure Britney needed something with a lot of bling to publicize.
I wouldn't ever buy my own ring. I think I would rather go without an engagement ring, because I think it's the meaning behind it, not the ring itself.
