If your SO was great and you are totally in love, but he sees no reason to get married, would you stick around or run?

I'd probably run or move on...Why would I waste my time with someone who doesn't want to commit the realtionship to marriage? That's just my opinion.

I agree 100%, except maybe if I was in my early 20's & not in an immediate rush to get married, have a family.

Well, is he not the 'marrying type' because he doesn't believe in the institution of marriage or because he doesn't want to commit?
If it was the former, yeah I'd stay, I can rationally see his argument.
If it was the latter, I'd hit the bricks.
P.S. Until I met FH I wasn't really the 'marrying type' because I didn't put much stock in the institution.

Re: If your SO was not the 'marrying type'
Funny part is that before he met me, my DH was NOT the marrying type ... had many long term relationships before we met, but had never come close to marriage
With us the subject only came up becuse HE actually brought it up first -- BUT said that meeting me was the first time he'd actually felt as though marraige was indeed something for him - (took meeting the right girl I guess )
BUT if had gone the other way - and it turned out that he wasn't looking for marriage with me either down the road - well I do believe eventually I would have been forced to end it and move on

Liz, before you met Mr. Boots you were in high school and all rebellious
I would move on. I'm a firm believer in knowing when it's right. It shouldn't ever be difficult to see someone that you want to see, it shouldn't be difficult to be with someone you want to be with...If someone didn't want to commit to me, I'm not going to waste my time.

he is a total husband in every sense except he does not need 'a piece of paper'

Aren't there a lot of advantages that come with that 'piece of paper'? For health benefits and whatnot? Is it important to the other person in the relationship?

Then, I'd stick around.
But it all depends on how important that piece of paper is to you.

sorry simply hypothetical question. just wondering and bored. That if you found the 'perfect man' but he had that one hang up would you end the relationship?
I think eventually I would end it.

Re: If your SO was not the 'marrying type'
I have a friend who has been dating someone for about 6 years now and he is terrified of commitment. They are living together for about 4 years now, have moved to several different states together and are perfect for each other. But there is no talk of marriage. The problem is that she wants to start a family, but not until she is married. So she's waiting for him to come around.
And I'm afraid he won't because he also has a fear of committing to a job....he's had multiple jobs over the years they've been together and I think the longest he was at any of them was about 6 months....constantly switching for no apparent reason.
If I were her, I dont' know how much longer I'd wait around for him.....

I would move on. I need that 'piece of paper' and if he was one of those people that don't then we fundamentally disagree on a major life issue so to me that would mean that despite everything else seeming right, he was not the one for me.
To me, that's on the same level as wanting or not wanting kids.

I never thought I was a person who cared about that 'piece of paper' as long as the commitment was there. I can understand someone having reservations about the institution, or even dismissing it altogether. Plus, I think in some states benefits are extended to common law spouses.
Of course, now that I have that piece of paper, I'm pretty happy about it.

Re: If your SO was not the 'marrying type'
I used to be that person... I never considered marriage because I simply don't (or, should I say, didn't) believe in the institution of marriage, and had serious doubts that humans are really meant to be with one person for the rest of their lives... didn't mean I had committment issues - I had two very serious, long-term relationships before DH. But, one day after meeting DH I was telling everyone I knew I was going to marry him, and I did, about a year later... my mom has a good friend who lived with a man like that for about 20 years. One day he woke up, broke up with her, and 4 months later he married someone else... makes you think!

Re: If your SO was not the 'marrying type'
One of the things that really attracted me to DH was the fact that he wanted marriage and children and was very serious about finding someone and being a good husband. I gravitated to him more because I had been in so many crap relationships but wanted to find someone to share my life with. The fact that we were seeking the same things was a big catalyst in moving the relationship along. That, and the fact that we were perfect for each other.
