What do you think about guests not attending the ceremony, but attending the reception?
IMO - I always go to the ceremony. I honestly think it's kind of rude not to watch the couple exchange vows, but then show up later at the party to eat and dance at their expense. The ceremony is the most important part. Without the marriage there would be no reception! I also would feel kinda crummy and let-down if only a handful of people showed up for my ceremony. Again, just my opinion....
now your thoughts???

i'd honestly only be offended if my close friends and family didn't show up as they're really the only ones i want there with me. everyone else who's invited are those obligatory people you really can't get out of, you know?

i like to go to the ceremony, since that is the actual wedding, but sometimes you just cant make it (mostly because of work).
If it was a close friend or family member of mine that didnt come i would be pretty ticked unless they had a good reason

in all honesty, i was fine that not everyone came to the ceremony... the people that were closest to us were there and that's what mattered to me. even some people that weren't invited to the wedding or people that couldn't make the reception came to the ceremony, which was nice. everyone else helped us celebrate at the reception and i was okay with it. i'll be honest, i don't always go to the ceremony... if i'm not that close with the person, i don't. i just feel like it's something very intimate. i don't just go to the reception to drink, eat and dance at their expense - but because i do want to be part of the celebration.

It would only matter to me if it was my close family or friends. I wouldn't care if it was more extended family or co-workers, and it also depends on the timing of the ceremony and reception. It really all depends on the situation. I would rather have a great party than a packed church since you can't don't really have the opportunity to talk to people at the church anyway.

I would be upset if it was a close friend or family member that didn't attend the ceremony. The church where our reception is being held is about 45 min away from the RH, and there are 3.5 hrs b/w the ceremony and CH. I would understand if not everyone attends the ceremony.

It completely upsets me that people go to the party without going to the reason for the day. I fully understand if someone has to work, but we had numerous people not come to the ceremony. I had never even heard of this before. But thankfully, a friend of mine came to the ceremony but couldn't make the reception. I still think the others are big poopy heads. Most people have no real excuse. They just don't want to be bothered with the ceremony. JMO!

It's not like the ceremony is a surprise thrown in at the last minute. It's the FIRST thing mentioned in an invitation and hello, people have MONTHS to plan to attend it. If there are emergencies or extra long distances involved for some guests I can understand not attending, but I still think guests should attend the ceremony. Why and when did this whole skipping the ceremony thing start? What is the big deal to sit for an hour to observe a marriage ceremony? We sit for hours watching movies and tv, staring at computer screens surfing the internet. Gimme a break! To me I think it's more uncomfortable to attend a reception for a person I don't know well (eat the food, etc.) than to attend their wedding ceremony. First attend the ceremony and you may feel you know them a little better, which helps to make the reception all the more enjoyable. In my opinion it's just respectful to the couple to attend the ceremony.
Thanks for all the reponses ladies. A lot of good points have been made!

I VERY MUCH would like for everyone to make it to our ceremony at my church. I would really hate to walk into a church with only 20 people - I get really sad thinking about that possibility.
However, it's VERY likely that we'll have very few people at our ceremony because (a) it's on a Friday and (b) its only 45 minutes from the RH but there will be an hour and a half-2 hour gap. :(
I just hope the people that are closest to us come to the ceremony. I think that's the most important part - although the party is great.
