I'm afraid of my cat......

Original post by palebride

I've had this little 10 pound ball of fut for 14 years...he was a birthday present from my best friend.
He's never been loving or kind, and has always enjoyed biting and scratching me....
but lately, he (and this sounds crazy) TERRORIZES me when I'm sleeping!!

Every morning, I take a shower and then go back to bed for a little more sleep....well, he climbs into bed with me and then stares at me....i've learned not to let him see my arms above the covers, becasue the sight of my pale flesh incites a rage in him and he attacks me arms. So I wait until he's settled and then i can put my arms above the covers.

But, starting yesterday, hiding my arms wasnt' enough....he tried to attack my head!!! It sound so silly, but I am terrified of him in the morning...I have to trick him and then pick him up and lock him out of the room....

What can I do with this little evil freak of nature????? And does anyone know why he might be behaving like this?

And, he only does this in the morning, during the day, and at night, he leaves me alone and will even curl up next to me on the couch......

SUGGESTIONS??????

How long has this been going on? Maybe it is just a temporary habit he picked up??????? If you get up and give him a treat, like some wet food will he leave you alone for a while or come right back to get you?

he always attacks me in the morning...but usually only my arms....that i dont' mind that much becasue it lasts a few seconds and then it's over.

but this head biting thing is bad.....he wont' stop until he tastes flesh.....maybe i'll keep a spray bottle by the bed.....or some treats......

Wow.. this sucks!

My Best Man had a cat named appropiately 'Manson'.. and this ******* was crazy. He would climb up stuff on the kitchen and perch himself on top of the fridge like he was going to jump you. I was afraid to go into my friend's kitchen. He had to go get me a beer. Then I saw the cat freak out one night and that was it.. I refused to be under the same roof as that crazy pussycat.

Lori, I think I've told you about my crazy cat in the past. She is EXACTLY like yours. To the T. And I think it has something to do with the fact that she was a ferrel(sp) cat. I got her from the pound, but they got the kittens from some dumpster or something. Wild cats are totally different than domesticated ones. There's no domesticating those monsters!

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who lives under the terror of a cat.....

NO CHANCE IN HELL! But you know what WOULD be fun? If we put them both in a box and had them duke it out. It'll be a fair fight because mine has no claws either

I don't have a cta, but I do have a VERY hyper dog. I just want to let you know that the suggestion to use treats is a BAD idea, it's like you're rewarding him for bad behavior and he will only do it more often. Try the spray bottle with water and a little lemon juice. If you do it everytime he bothers you he will learn to keep his paws to himself!

'Every morning, I take a shower and then go back to bed for a little more sleep....well, he climbs into bed with me and then stares at me....'

A question - do you feed him before the attacks? If not, he might be trying to get you out of bed so you'll feed him.

Once my 2 cats see me stir even a little bit in the morning, they're all over me. And when my eyes open, forget it - it's non stop meowing and harrassment! My youngest one has bitten me before (not too hard though) in an attempt to get me up!

I would say to definitely keep your cat out of the bedroom when you sleep. If you don't already, I would definitely feed him before you go back to sleep. And, a trip or at least a phone call to your vet could help shed some light on things.

Good luck!

ETA: From my experience, a full kitty is a relaxed and sleepy kitty!

Ummm...not sure how you are going to feel about this theory, but my friend's cat started to do that to her when she got pregnant.

She didn't even know she was pregnant yet. She mentioned the cat's behavior and her vet told her that animals can sense those types of things immediately. She actually had to give her cat away until she had the baby.

Not to freak you out or anything....

he is declawed...but we had that done when he was much younger, so i dont' think he's reacting to that......it's like his whole personality changed!
oen of my MIL's cats likes to eat and play with hair......this is different....it's like he's out to get me.
the more i think about it, the more freaked out i get!!

My cat attacked me once. Same thing, she went for my head. To this day, I don't understand why she did it, but she's never done it again. Definately try the spray bottle trick. I've heard it works pretty well.

And that is the reason why Im not a fan of cats.......my FI mothers cat will walk right in front of you---shes eagerly seeking attention which I feel really bad for--but I dont like Claws and she whips those puppies out........but before she was neutered she was a PSYCHO!! And I mean that in the most serious way possible. Would attack your ankles, your feet, bite and scratch--and yes, I gottta say I was afraid too--shed look at you so intense--about 2 years ago she was in one of her moods, she happened to attack my FI face--you had to see him, his ankles and face were a bloody mess---Cats are WEIRD!!!!!

Lori - how did it go this morning, any more bites? It is awful but I couldn't help but laugh, I'm sorry . You should take him to the vet though. I had a cat for 19 1/2 years and he was generally not affectionate until the last few years of his life. They definitely change personalities later on in life, like an old person does. But maybe your vet can give you suggestions on how to handle this particular change?

Re: I'm afraid of my cat......

My cat did that as a kitten, but he grew out of it and I chalked it up to wanting to play. That really does sound scarey. My cat bites my ankles when I get out of bed in the morning, I either have to run to the bathroom or wear flip flops (he doesn't like those for some reason). But it's ONLY in the morning and he has never done it to FH. Cats are weird sometimes. Sorry I don't have advice for you, maybe btrflygrl is right, maybe he's jealous of DH.
