I'm at my wits end... HELPPPPPPPPPPPP

Since Nicolas was about 6 weeks old he's been going to bed between 8 and 9pm, and sleeping until at least 3am, but usually closer to 5am. For the past week he's been waking up around midnight, and every hour after that until 7am! He's not quite awake ~ all he wants is his pacifier. Once he has it, he sleeps for another hour. I've tried keeping him up later (doesn't work... he is miserable and cranky until we put him in his crib), and letting him whine himself back to sleep (also doesn't work ~ turns into full blown screaming if we don't go in to him).

Why is this happening and what can I do??? I'm EXHAUSTED!!!!!!

I don't suppose you could tape the pacifier to his mouth??? No? Hmm, maybe some of the mommies can be more helpful

I hope your little guy goes back to his regular sleeping pattern soon

I was looking at your album at length this weekend. WOW.

I wish I could offer you some advise, but my little Madeleine seems to want to use me as a pacifier at night, so I feel for you. Especially when you break day... that really stinks. Wish I could be of more help...

Does he want a bottle maybe, not just a pacifer? I know that they go thru growth spurts where they eat a lot more often or eat larger amounts. I read on another parenting board that swaddling a baby before bed helps them sleep longer since their hands are not waking them up.
Maybe he is so used to the pacifer in his mouth that he is waking up when it falls out?
Molly also sleeps for that lenght of time, and I dread her getting up every hour if that is what is to come.
You must be exhusted!

Every baby is so different, that I cant offer a 'quick-fix' solution... Is he hungry at all?
Does the binky ALWAYS immediately soothe him? I remember those days also where we just had to get up, put the binky in, and he was happy again...

Lots of hugs to ya
and let us know of any progress

I wish I could say 'yes it's this' or 'no it's not that', but I'm working on trial and error here, and it's not fun.

In the past, the pacifier would drop out of his mouth when he fell asleep and he wouldn't miss it all night long. Now he whines almost hourly, and when I give it to him he conks right back out. Maybe he DOES want a bottle. I'm not crazy about reintroducing such early morning feedings, but I will do what works.

ETA: Around 6ish (sometimes more like 7:00) he won't take the pacifier and cries, so that's when we would feed him.

Would offering a bottle at midnight be asking for trouble??

Jenn, we didn't stop that 1 am-ish feeding until around the 4 month mark I think. And I can totally sympathize with you. Ryan was the same way until we did sleep training, but I think its way too early to start that with Nicolas.

I don't think at this point a midnight bottle will hurt - he may just be hungry! I didn't think I would, but you will know when it is time to cut that bottle out.

As far as the binky Ryan was the same way for a long time...now at least he can find it and put it in himself...I feel for you!!

I would try feeding him - he is in that growth spurt period and could be just hungry. If he doesn't want it - he will tell you. Try just making a smaller bottle so you don't waste much and maybe he will fall back asleep for you.

If he is spitting the paci out that much - he could be hungry. Try it and GOOD LUCK!!! I sympathize with you - Emily has decided that she wants to wake up for a 4am snack now.

I know he just turned 3 months but you might start thinking about starting cereal soon. I started Em 2 wks before her 4 mth chckup and it filled her up alittle more.

my gut says he's hungry. and since mommy is exhausted....FEED HIM!! The only reason I think so is that Sophia has been an absolute angel since I have increased her feedings. Not that I give her a bottle at the drop of a hat, but after she's nursed and she's been burped, tried to rock to sleep, pacifier, etc. if she's still fussy I offer the supplement and it's like magic. Unfortunately, when she wakes in the middle of the night - she wants the boobie...but that's okay - its' around every 2 hours or so...but she's only 7 weeks. I would try to feed him - see if it's better!

I read somewhere (of course I cant remember where) that you need to teach the baby to find the pacifier on their own because once attached to it, when it falls out they want it and cant find it so they wake up. What this article said to do was when this waking up occurs, to go in, not turn on any lights, dont talk to the baby, just take the babys hand and bring it to the pacificier and hand over hand put the pacificier back in the babies mouth. Eventually (and of course the article didnt explain how long eventually will be) the baby will learn to find the pacificier on his own and learn to soothe himself. Good luck.

Re: I'm at my wits end... HELPPPPPPPPPPPP

Well, the only thing that I can think if is that he might actually be hungry. I have been dealing with the same thing for the past 2 weeks with my daughter. She is a little over 5 months. She has slept all night since she has been 7 weeks (from 9 PM to 7 AM). All of a sudden (about 2 weeks ago) she started waking up between 1 and 3 AM every night. I tried the binky thing at first and she would fall back to sleep only to wake up again an hour later.

So for the past week I have been feeding her a bottle instead and then she would sleep thru the rest of the night. Then finally last night she slept all night again. Now I think that she was probably in a growth spurt. I make sure that she eats her usual amount during the day so that we dont start needing to eat at night. But it just seems as though she just needed a little extra for the past 2 weeks. We will see tonight if she sleeps thru. Its just trial and error to see what works. I can relate to your tiredness. I have been soooooo exhausted for the past week that I just want to scream!! I am like a zombie at work. Hopefully you will figure out why he is waking.
