I'm Depressed....Will Someone PLEASE HELP? (THE HTH)

Original post by radiostar

Hi everyone...1st of all, I love each and everyone of you. I've been just a 'reader' for quite some time now. You all have provided me with a lot of major support, laughter, and even a few tears! (thanks to the pictures)

I am planning my NY wedding from Chicago . . .which is more difficult than I could ever attempt to explain. We're getting married in Sept 2003. We were very close to booking the Huntington Townhouse UNTIL, I ran into this board. I don't think that I have read ONE SINGLE positive comment about this facility. As you probably know, their prices are rather on the reasonable side- - -which made our LARGE wedding dreams come true almost instantly. We visited the hall while we were in town over the holidays. I am unable to physically visit other halls because we are in Chicago.

Should I just book there and PRAY that everything turns out ok? Is there ANYONE here who has had a positive experience? Does anyone have any alternate suggestions that are relatively similiar price-wise? Please help me so that this migraine can go away and that I can stop crying.

We are having our wedding at The Swan Club and paying $57pp for a Saturday daytime wedding in July. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous - great for pictures. I also looked at Stewart Manor Country Club and remember their prices being reasonable - under $70pp. There are other places on Long Island that are reasonably priced. I would stay away from Huntington Townhouse if you are nervous about it. I thought at one time they were going bankrupt, but I could be wrong. Good luck!

You should look into the Scotto Brothers halls. Their halls are beautiful and they have a great repuation for food and service. I'm pretty sure that for a Friday night the prices are reasonable. website

oh yeah, one more thing. we never looked at halls so i am more familiar with 'non traditional' type places, but i seem to remember that the Crow's Nest was fairly reasonalbe (their 3-day wedding package wa sonly $65, so i would think they could do a Friday night for a lot less. They are all the way out in Montauk (not sure where you wanted to do it - in Suffolk or Nassau) but they are on the water and it looks nice. Good luck!

There is also The Watermill and also Majestic Gardens. I have seen both places and they are very pretty and the food was good. A co-worker's daughter had her wedding at the HTH and it was a disaster. They over ran one wedding's cocktail hour and when her daughter's cocktail hour started (which ran 20 minutes shorter because of this) they were literally throwing the food on the tables. They also did not get the room they wanted. We are going to a wedding on Sunday at the Millridge Inn. I have heard great things about there. I will let you know how it is.

The Meadow Club is in that price range for a Friday night. Forum mail me if you want more info. Also, if you get married in Jan, Feb, or March, some halls will give you a discounted rate. Don't stress. You'll find something that you love!

Re: I'm Depressed....Will Someone PLEASE HELP? (THE HTH)

radiostar,

Hang in there .. this is supposed to be a happy time ... but, yes, I know it can be so stressful .. but I can't imagine having to do the planning long distance!

Anyway, from the range you said, especially since you're not figuring in taxes and such, I absolutely have to recommend John Anthony's. We had our reception there in Sep. 2001, and we couldn't imagine what more they could have given us had we been charged the fees some places out there charge! Our reception was a Sunday evening .. so I think you should be able to get a price in your range for a Friday night .. unless their prices have gone up from when we signed our contract in Sept. 2000 .. which I guess is possible.

I'm not sure what type of place you were looking for, but John Anthony's has a gorgeous view of the Great South Bay and the Robert Moses Causeway Bridge. There aren't any beautiful gardens there, but there is a deck that provides for spectacular photo opportunities!

I know I'm rambling .. it's late and I'm really tired, but my husband and I really thought this place was an extraordinary value!! Oh, and the food is so amazing! I wish we could go back to eat there! I really can't say enough good things about the place .. as I'm sure most brides feel about their sites after their weddings .. and you should have that feeling too! Remember, there's cheap, and then there's cheap.

I always feel bad for the brides who ask about the Huntington Townhouse, because I can't recall seeing a positive post on the place, either .. and this board is such a tremendous wealth of information. My impression of the place, from a wedding my parents attended a while back, was that it's okay .. but nothing special .. ordinary food, etc. You might want to shop around a little .. you could be pleasantly suprised at what's out there in your range!

John Anthony's

I almost booked Huntington Town House too, mainly because of the price. I then found so many places with similar prices that were so much nicer. They have a horrible reputation which the ladies here have written about many times, just do a search. I also think the people there are very shady. I still haven't received my 'fully refundable deposit' back and that was last May. I had a similar price range and I booked Fox Hollow for a Sunday. The Scotto places are beautiful and may be possible in that range on a Friday. Holidays are cheaper, maybe Labor day Sunday if you're looking at Sept. I also really liked Manor East and Swan Club. You actually have quite a few choices in your range, it really depends on what you're looking for.

RadioStar,

ok i'm here to relieve some of your fears

i'm in california but FH booked HTH for our east coast reception. i then found this site a couple days later and did a search on it and found all the negative comments you also saw.

first of all, the girls on LIWeddings are a small percentage of the brides on Long Island. and don't believe everything you hear to be the 'final truth'

i've heard there are a couple people you should not work with at HTH, well one in particular. i can FM you about that if you want. However, the other two are great to work with and my FH had nothing but praise for them. they were very accomodating.

yes, the drawback is that there are multiple weddings at the same time. but i know dozens of people who have been to receptions there and they haven't had problems. and you might have read comments about there not being valet service and stuff - thats up to the bride and groom to pay for - so if they didnt have it, it's not HTH's responsibility.

i can't say much about the food - i know there have been negative comments about that but we're having indian food catered so i have no clue about that. the pictures of the place are gorgeous and people i kno who have had parties there or attended them loved it.

not sure what else to say .. u can FM if you want more info. just don't freak out over comments on one wedding board. i did that as well but realized i was wrong to do so. it did make me more alert and therefore i had FH talk to them in more detail etc. but if it were really such a bad place they wouldnt be booked for multiple parties there every single weekend.

again FM if you want any other info .. good luck with your decision, whatever it is

I went to a wedding at huntington townhouse and it was nice. The cocktail hour was set up nice and the food was good. I did not like the main course items but I am a very picky eater so I may not be the best person to focus on that. For the price you stated I would say thats great b/c I don't think when I was planning my wedding I came close to getting that from any hall on LI. However if you can afford to go up to 70 pp I would say that there are better halls on the island that you can afford. However if you all are really happy with what you have I say go for it.

Re: I'm Depressed....Will Someone PLEASE HELP? (THE HTH)

hang in there - I planned our wedding from CA (in under 10 months). Looking for a place was the most stressful experience. I was a nutcase until we finally booked.

You have plenty of options in your price range. Considering what you're willing to spend and that you want a Friday night, I think you can do much better than HTH (no offense to anyone who's booked there). My parents got married there 35 years ago and it was wonderful then (so I hear), but things have changed. I didn't even consider it because it's too much of a wedding factory for my tastes (one wedding at a time was important to me) and such a poor reputation.

Do you have family/friends in NY that can do some legwork for you? You're lucky you found this site, its a great resource for narrowing down options. I researched reception locations online and then sent my parents around to those I was interested in. Then on our trips to NY, we had a lot less locations to check out.

You've already gotten quite a list of great options - don't rush the decision. Wait until you're sure.

Hi Radiostar!!

Welcome to the boards!! I have never been to the HTH at all so I can't tell you how the service and food is there. But please listen to the boards and decide what you feel is right for you

I am having my reception at the Coral House in Baldwin...they are very reasonable and willing to work with you..... www.coralhouse.com . Also look at www.weddingfacilitiesandservices.com ....they have a lot of information. Good luck and let us know what you decide!!

Welcome again!!

Re: I'm Depressed....Will Someone PLEASE HELP? (THE HTH)

I would suggest that you check out some of the other places that us ladies on here have suggested. You may find something that you love that is the same price as HTH. Or if you don't, you at least have peace of mind in your decision to choose the HTH and it sounds like you need peace of mind before you book it. I don't think you should book a place until you are sure you want your wedding there. The reception hall is a big investment of your wedding funds and a big part of a very important day!

I'd say you should check out some of the places the ladies on here have suggested. I'd also suggest the Riviera (on the water in Massapequ), the Stewart Manor Country Club, and 15th & West (through Stone Caterers--it's where I'm having my wedding...FM me for details!). Many places have websites with virtual tours or they may mail you things like CD-ROMS (I think the Watermill sent me a nice one once). Also, if you find a place the provides centerpieces but it more expensive per person factor in savings from the not buying them from a florist! Good Luck!

I think Crest Hollow is a beautiful place to have a reception! I think they range from $65 and up. Could be less, I don't know. But I think it's beautiful there!!! Good luck! Don't stress!

I would say definetely check out FOX HOLLOW, NORTH RITZ CLUB & I'll try to think of more places in that price range--depending on your time of year and what day etc...

I hate to say this but to be honest-i would stay clear of the HTH-you do get what you pay for-I don't want to upset u but I went to a wedding there last June- and people are still talking about it...not in a good way though...

Re: I'm Depressed....Will Someone PLEASE HELP? (THE HTH)

Hi! I'm just reading this post....
don't worry about a thing! I have never heard of your place- or heard good/bad things about it. All I can say is, if one of the posts were true and it does NOT come with the extra's like vallet parking, coat check etc... they will charge you for that. So, that amazing price you got will go up and up very quickly. I know one of the most expensive places on Long Island The Caryle does not include either of those and they do charge extra for it! There are many good suggestions for you here. The Scotto Brothers have nice halls. The C. Briand is off of a main road (I personally didn't like that) The Fox Hollow is really nice, right down the block from The Crest Hollow (that's where we have booked) my budget was about the same as yours seems, with a few less people and The Crest Hollow worked with me. There's nothing I'm not getting that I wanted. Visit their website www.cresthollow.com and see. Call them, I'm sure they'd be willing to help you on the phone. The Watermill is another Scotto Brothers hall. I went to a wedding here, it was gorgeous, but they rushed the Sat. day wedding to get to the night. I did NOT like the service there, and I'm very easy going. (Just a note to discuss with them to make sure your guests get to eat all their food before the plates are taken from them)

We're all here to help you any way we can. I know we might be a 'small percentage' of brides to be... but we all have friends and relatives that have gotten married in various halls here on Long Island. So, if there are a lot of negative things being said, something in there has to be true. I wouldnt' base your entire decision on what's on the board, but I'd pay attention to it. Just my 2 cents

Re: I'm Depressed....Will Someone PLEASE HELP? (THE HTH)

I had my wedding in Chateau Briand and loved it. My guest loved the food and the service was incredible. They treated us like royalty.
I paid for a Sunday day wedding in Sept $72 pp plus tax and that was for about 115 people. I think the bigger your party the better the price pp. Def check it out.

You still have time and all the other places the other brides mentioned are also beautiful and I have heard great things about also.

If you need any help or if you have any questions just let me know.
