Re: Im in the mood for some controversy, Anyone else?(beware strong subject)

Ooohhh....I want to say what I really think but I'll get my tush kicked I'm sure.
Here goes---and this is STRICTLY my own opinion!! I would never want to or would push my own beliefs for myself on anyone else.
For me, I think it depends on the age of the fetus. I think after a certain point in time-say 4-9 months--yes, it should have 'rights'. For instance, in the Laci Peterson case, the child was almost full term.
Again, just my own opinion for myself. Of course, I might feel very differently if something should happen to me in early stages of pregnancy or someone close to me. My mind is always open and willing to change!

If so, should they be equal to those of the parents?

I guess this is the old debate and I am not sure if it is best to do on this board. Most everyone in my life knows that I am very pro-choice. In college I went to Albany with Planned Parenthood and lobbied for a women's right to choice what is best for her own body and her own life. It can be a very personal decision, one that each women must make on their own. But more important than being pro-choice is the fact that I am pro-education. Teaching girls about what it means to get pregnant and make this choice is most important in helping to prevent teen pregnancy. If both sides actually worked together on prevention there would be a lot less girls/women forced into making the most difficult decision in their lives.

editted to say: Laci Petterson was not making a choice at all. Her life was taken and thus the life of her children was also taken. I think that is horrible. Also abortion is illegal after a certain period of time UNLESS the life of the mother is in jeapordy. In those cases, it is even worse because those women want to have their children but may die if they do. Very different than a sicko killing a 9-month pregnant women.

I don't think so, and here is my humble opinion. If you classify an unborn fetus as a human with the same rights as all humans, then abortion falls by the wayside entirely. I know that some will say that the fetus should be a person at the third trimester or somewhere around there. But you can never pinpoint exactly when that is. And even if you could, what about one second before that, or one minute or one hour? I also think that it completely changes the social status of women in general.

I heard this example once about an unplanned pregnancy - imagine you wake up one day and you are lying in a bed and there is an IV sticking out of your arm and it is attacked to a bag. On the other side of that bag is another IV that is attached to the bag an to another person. You don't know this person. A doctor comes in and says, 'Oh the IV that is coming from you is keeping this person alive. If we unhook you, this person will die. Don't worry, this will only last for nine months. At that point we can unhook you, but this person will live with you for 18 years after that. Sorry, we can't unhook you, becuase this person has rights.'

I just can't see how you can give a fetus rights without taking away right from all of us. And I am not willing to give up my rights. Even though that is not a right I would EVER exercise.

I agree with Sunny in that I am Pro Choice, and while I don't think I could ever have an abortion I don't feel that it is my right to prohibit others from doing so. That being said I have a real problem with late term abortions. I agree with LeeLee in that I strongly believe that there is a point at which the process of splitting cells during gestation ceases to be merely a mass of cells and takes on a new persona, one which should be afforded some rights. What I have trouble with is determining if these rights supercede those of the mother.

In a sitiation like this I believe he should be tried for 2 counts of murder, I guess yess the fetus should have same rights.

In abortion different thoughts Im pro choice

I'll bite.

No, I don't think a fetus should have rights - let alone the same rights as a viable person. I think that's serious infringement on women who choose to have an abortion - and it's not going to stop people from killing a pregnant woman. So to me, giving a fetus the same rights as a person, will do more harm than good.

CP I hear that. But in this instance I agree that the fetus should have rights, but then again like you said when it comes to abortion it opens the door to other situations

I can't even involve myself in this discussion because it's something I would never do unless put in a horrible situation (rape or jeopardy of death). I think that there has to be more education. I don't understand what the great pregnancy mystery is.. use something lest you get pregnant. I don't think it should be a form of birth control, but I don't think the choice should ever be taken away- if someone can live with the decision to use abortion as birth control- good for them. I couldn't.. My uncle's wife refuses to take birth control pills or use condoms.. She is 25 years old (he's in his 40s) and she doesn't want to have any more kids (she has 1, but he isn't the father). So far she has had 5 abortions in the past 3 years all of his kids and they are MARRIED and have a non-abusive relationship- she just 'doesn't want to get fat again'= that's what makes me sick.. the people, not the operation.

I agree with Leelee... I realize that people 'make mistakes', but if you do, take care of it right away. I know so many people who are trying so hard to get pregnant... it has made me feel a little differently as a pro-choice woman. But I don't think it's up to the government to decide what women should do with their bodies.

Now this next comment may be harsh, but it has always been one of my arguments for being pro-choice: Who here remembers when you were in the womb, or even a few months old? Does life really begin immediately upon conception, or is it later? When the heartbeat starts, once the baby is born, or once you start to be cognizant of being alive? I still can't answer that.

I don't think that fetus should have the same rights as women or more, for the reasons that few of you girls listed. I believe that it should always be a woman's choice to keep or not to keep the pregnancy. I doubt any law can protect pregnant women more than non-pregnant, without causing a backlash (i.e. someone saying that they were pregnant one months and falsely accusing an attacker of harm to two persons)

Last night about midnight on CH 9 they showed how many abortions are done in the world and how many late term abortions it shook me to my core As much as I would not have an abortion, I think its the woman's right to choose. I saw a video last night how the perform late term abortions and it really made me think, these babies are humans already, you saw it swallow, breathe, oh my word. I guess it comes down to a personal choice.

Well, I am going to have to disagree with most here and say that yes, the fetus has rights. But, I also don't see abortion as a 'choice.' Sure it is a choice that some people feel they have to make, but I don't think it should even be an option.

Re: Im in the mood for some controversy, Anyone else?(beware strong subject)

I don't think anyone can answer when life begins - it's all based on heresay and opinion. Religion says it's at conception. I say it's when the fetus is viable - when it is able to live & breath on its own without artificial support or the mothers womb.

It's a constant duality for me. I staunchly support a woman's right to choose - I've marched on Washington in support of this, I've supported friends who have had abortions - but I really don't think I could have one myself. I'm 100% pro-choice, but a part of me feels that Peterson should be charged with 2 murders - even though that won't end the murder of pregnant women nor would it bring justice to the woman who carried the fetus for 8+ months.

It's a tough call...I'm glad I don't have to make it. I just wish we weren't in a society where abortion was a political issue - I believe it's a personal & private choice that shouldn't involve government - especially with our current government...just scares me. Bottom line for me...potential life isn't equal to life.

Interesting.

Even with as conservative as I am, I am still very pro-choice, and like Michele, have even attended rallies. I feel very strongly on this topic.

I'm confused though--is the article (or mag cover wacky posted) about being pro-choice/life or is it spurred by the Laci Peterson case--does a fetus, no matter at what point, have the same rights as a person living outside of a womb?
