So FMIL finally got her dress. FH tells me about it and says that it is DARK purple. My bridesmaids are wearing a darker violet, which he and FMIL both knew, but since he said dark I figured 'OK, they should be far enough apart that it will be OK.' Well, this is the dress she's wearing in the exact color it will be. The second pic is my bridesmaids dresses in their exact color. Am I nuts for flipping out on him because they are way too close to each other?? Please be honest. Im not looking for people to take my side, I just want to know what other people will be thinking when they see this.
FH keeps telling me 'Its no big deal.'

That is very sweet of you and I give you tons of credit. I love my mom to death but I'd cry if she asked to wear white. I am normally not the kind that wants to be the center of attention or anything but on my wedding day, I want to be the only one in white! Does that make me sound selfish or rude?
No I dont think so at all! I went to a wedding in August and one of the guests had a mostly white dress on. I was mad and it wasn't even my wedding!
But definitly much credit to you for letting your mom wear white!

I just want a 'springy' atomsphere that day. Aside from the lilac in my girls dresses, there will be some pick in their bouquets. But thats really it.

Well.. To be honest I just went MOB dress shopping today with my mom and I actually would like her to wear something that is in the smae color family as my girls. Only because if we take any pictures together I really dont want my mom clashing with the girls. they will know she is not in the BP, but I actually like it when they wear the same color as the bridesmaids, jsut not exact~ My mom will be wearing a blue dress and my girls dresses are ivory lace with a blue underlay so I think yours will look really nice!

No I would be pissed..I was also very upset because my FMIL told me she got a GOLD dress...My BMs are wearing champagne..
So I was pissed...It did cause a whole big thing...But when I saw the dress...IT IS GOLD...i do nto knwo why she likes it but ....it is no where near my color...and if she wants to weay it she can. FSIL tried to get her mom to change the dress but it is not happening....

Maybe you could put your mom into a beige/cream or a bluish/green colored dress. I think there are lots of ways you could go. Don't let this put a bump in your road to happiness. ya know!

No! I think you are entitled, on this day, to feel and do as you wish. Other things are more important to me than what my Family is wearing. Like........how far away can i put my FMIL from the dais?

personally, i don't think she should be wearing a color that similar. My FMIL refused to tell me what color her gown was because she wanted it to be a surprise, but my mom wound up changing her gown 3 times so I eventually got a general idea of what color she is wearing because there is no way I wanted them wearing the same color. I'm a believer that the MIL should choose her gown last and that she should consult with the bride. If there is one day in your life that you get to be a little choosey, it's def. the day of your wedding. I'm sure there are a million girls out there who disagree, and that is OK, this is how *i* feel.
On another note, she already ordered it, so why waste time getting heated over it? If she was just contemplating it, i'd tell her that you would like if she got the dress in a diff. color, but it's too late.

IMHO this is not a big deal at all!!!!!!
My Mom and MIL both wore Chocolate Brown, the SAME color as my BM dresses -- at MY request
I liked the idea of a unifying color scheme.
Also, if you don't have a SIL, I don't think there are any formal pictures that your FMIL will be in with the BMs???

I think the colors aren't even close. No worries. I wouldn't even give it a second thought.
Edit...Also My fmil got a willow blue dress and my mom ended up getting navy. they were both okay with having similar colors. We were calling my fmil from the dress shop with my mom to check on what shade of blue her dress was. Both her and my mom had the same reaction...eh, even if it's the same color, no big deal. I know that is different b/c its the 2 moms and not the moms and the bm's, but just wanted to throw that out there because I feel like alot of people wouldn't even realize if they had a very similar color.

my BM dresses are a weird shade of blue (see my avatar and my pictures) and my mom and FMIL said they would avoid looking at blue dresses because they didn't want to clash. My mom ended up with a brown dress and FMIL is still looking (she is open to color but promised she wouldn't get white/ivory, black or blue).
I actually think your FMIL's dress looks great with the BMs -- doesn't clash and doesn't look like she's part of the wedding party.
As long as your mom didn't want that exact same dress, it's not a big deal -- you're lucky your FMIL picked such a nice dress

IMO they are not too similar. Originally i didnt want my mom to wear black to my wedding because my bridesmaids are in black and white. But the dress we ended up picking out is black but is a totally different style from the girls so we're all happy and my moms and bms dresses dont look similar at all.

I totally understand why you'd be upset -- I would be too... Luckily though, the colors are far enough away from each other you are safe. And you mom definitely wont look out of place!!
