Im scared..need some womanly advice...

Original post by aliciahelene

I had a check up with my gyno and she called yesterday and said I have some abnormal cells, that they could lead to cervical cancer..I started freaking out, but my sister says this is common, that I may go in and everything could be fine. This has never happened to me and Im terrified. They cant even get me in until the 30th, so does that mean its most likely nothing? What could cause a test to come up abnormal? We are TTC and Im freaking out right now.Has this happened to anyone???

my sister was told the same thing and it was nothing so dont worry. if your dr was concerned they would have made you come in much early. just dont stress it will be fine.

Octbride...the same thing happened to my sister. She had the freezing done and they just have to watch it. She had some procedure done where she said it was pretty painful but at least it's all over.

yes, i have heard this many times and it turned out fine dont worry

Me too. This has happened to me several times. I'm sure it's not cancer. You just have to keep getting check-ups, and they may have to freeze some cells to get rid of them, but it it most likely not cancer. FM me if you have more questions. You will be fine!!

Not to worry!!! It's just a precaution. There are so many things that render a false positive reading on a pap. I even heard that having sex 72 hours prior could throw off the results.

You'll be fine.

Re: Im scared..need some womanly advice...

I'm sorry that you're feeling scared. I had the exact same thing happen a few years ago. In my case, it turned out to be some abnormal cells that the doctor wanted to remove. The doc assured me that they weren't 'cancerous,' just 'abnormal,' and he wanted to remove them to avoid possible future problems. I had an in-office procedure called 'LEEP' -- they freeze the cells and remove them. I was scared, but the procedure was fairly quick (I was in there for an hour, and most of that hour was waiting in the lobby!) and (honestly!) no more painful than your average gyno visit. I was fine almost immediately afterwards, too. Afterwards, I needed a check up every six months until I had three normal test results in a row. And that happened right away -- I've been fine ever since (knock wood!). And my doctor told me that the procedure causes no risk to fertility.

So, even if the test came up abnormal because of real abnormal cells, things can be just fine!

I had the same thing years ago. I just had the cryo surgery (freezing) and i've been fine since. It did hurt a bit, and after its like bad cramps, but it felt better the next day.

It's normal and you'll be fine!!

Re: Im scared..need some womanly advice...

Ok...I went through this so here's my story and advice..
I had 5 pap smears in a row with abnormal cells ( which is lay-man terms means pretty much NOTHING)

So first... relax...I tried antibiotics for a while ( 3 years) but it wasnt getting better...( I do know people who went on three weeks of antibiotic and next pap smear was FINE...and following ones..) So I ended up having cancerous cells on my 6th pap....they did a 'freezing' of the cells... took about 5 minutes, freezes the cells off....well That didnt work and the cells became worse....

I was given options and put it off for TWO years...lucikly the cells didnt invade my cervix...but they did become stage 1 cancer cells, and to be honest, the Dr's really had no 'huge' fears which made me feel very relaxed about it...I ended up finding a cervical cancer specialist, went to him...he had me schedule a 'leep' procedure..with laser...

Basically, they lasered( permenatly burn off) the cells that were multiplying and then the leep ( a toold that is red hot) cuts out the piece of cervic that helpd the cancer cells.. I SWEAR the whole procedure took 3 minutes..I was fully awake with a local to the area( another dr wanted me to be put asleep..it was so not needed) I felt not even an once of pain during it...not even the needle anesthesia to the area!! They numb that first with a swab....
I had pap's every month for 3 months, every 6 months for one year following and so far they are all normal!
My Dr has reasuured me that I will not have any difficulty getting pregnant, nor will I have a weakened cervic...
I know I wrote a book..but if for some reason it leads to anything more, I want you to know that the experience is NOT that bad, it's a little scary but there is truly ( I would not lie about this) no reason to worry....
Following my experience...TWO of my closest friends all had to have a loop procedure as well...I'm telling you this to show you how common this sort of thing is..
AGAIN, dont woryy, just express your fears, concerns to your Dr, and FM me if you need the specialist's name if you dont feel comfortable with your Dr...

This is what my experience was, but my doctor apparently didnt go to the same school as yours.. hahaha cause he said I HAD to remove those cells. Then again I had three byopsies. Maybe that was why? He said it was serious and I needed to take it seriously. I had them frozen off as well. Yes it was quick and not too painful.

I was 'not' ok afterwards. I had 'drainage' for a full month. It was VERY uncomfortable and embarassing. I had to be checked up every month for three months then every six months for 3 years.

I was scared blind. My grandmother had just died 3 months prior with cancer.

I did get through it ok and Im clean now, I do now wholeheartedly believe in early action. Take care of it now.

As far as children are concerned I'd ask your gyno. Again, mine was apparently melodramatic and told me (rather it was in the pamplet I got) that there was a chance that I could lose up to 20% of my effectiveness of having children.

Im sorry to be the bummer here. I just wanted you to know they are some scary things out there and I want you to be prepared. It is ALWAYS better to catch this early. It's good that you can handle it now.

If you wanna talk.. FM me.

X...I would seriously check on what your Dr has advised you ...I had 3 biopsies as well, all 3 cone biopsies, the freezing is a very minor procedure.. I have a very large piece of my cervic removed whereas the freezing removes only surface cells ...there is no way that your pregnancy chances are diminshed or those quotes are correct. My specialist has written tons of books on cervical cancer and my regular OBGYN is chief of OBGYN at a LI hospital...that pamphlet must be old because those quotes are not correct...alich..you can do a websearch to get a TON of info on this...since I had first stage cancer I was ALWAYS questioning and read up on a ton...I dont want to say your dr was wrong, but if you are planning on having children, get a second opinion on what was told to you so you are not afraid ...Im sorry you had one of the 'few' bad experiences....
like I have said...abnormal cells occurs in 400 out of every 1000 woman....so it is common..
I wish you both hugs!
p.s yes you cannot have sex for at least 4-5 after most procedures

DM: This was 7 years ago, I was 21. It was said 'up to 20% chance' the way I read to be was that there was no garuantee it's 'completely 100% harmless'. Does it mean you can automatically lose a chance? I doubt it. But being that every woman is different the pamplet I read could have been more written by an attorney than a doctor. It's possible.

I've been clean since. My new doc says all the parts are working fine. No diminished chances that she can justify. But to not even mention it or to ignore the possibility isn't being honest.

I didnt mean to scare her. Just to point out this to PREVENT her from being afraid, if that makes sense. Im sorry. I probably said it wrong. That pamplet scared the crap out of me and only to find out I was fine afterwards. I called it a lot of undue stress. If I had someone out there tell me 'hey I read this too, but was ok' well then I could at least say I too could be alright. I had no one to bounce it off of, just that stupid pamplet.

So that being said. You said prehaps it was 'old' well yah, 7 years is a lifetime ago wiht the technology advancements. My biggest complaint about the whole thing in all was the recovery.. that 'drainage' crap REALLY sucked. NO ONE warned me about that either. Prehaps they dont have that problem anymore.

I can say there was no need for local anastia (sp) it wasn't that bad. I was on the table less than 15mins. It was timed sessions. I was in and out of the place in under an hour easy.

What do I know? *shrug* only my experience.

Re: Im scared..need some womanly advice...

and my stupid doc sent me A LETTER telling me that the pap was abnormal, no explanation. So in the meantime I was freaking out not knowing what that meant. My mom was scared, but told me afterwards so she wouldn't scare me. It would have been nice to get a phonecall about something like that so i can know what i'm dealing with.

I'm no longer with that doctor!!! My doc now says he'll call if anything is wrong.
