Im scared..need some womanly advice...

Original post by aliciahelene

I had a check up with my gyno and she called yesterday and said I have some abnormal cells, that they could lead to cervical cancer..I started freaking out, but my sister says this is common, that I may go in and everything could be fine. This has never happened to me and Im terrified. They cant even get me in until the 30th, so does that mean its most likely nothing? What could cause a test to come up abnormal? We are TTC and Im freaking out right now.Has this happened to anyone???

I even heard that having sex 72 hours prior could throw off the results.

I was just going to say this. Having sex 24 hours before a pap can lead to false positives. I go for paps twice a year because I'm on the pill, and we don't have sex the night before my appointment.

Hopefully since you and DH are TTC, this is what the problem was.

My friend had this happen to her just a few weeks ago. It turned out, she just had HPV on the inside part of her as opposed to the outside where it's obvious what it was. She got it from a guy, but it basically stays dormant the majority of the time and is not a problem. I hope everything works out for you!

I'm sorry that you're feeling scared. I had the exact same thing happen a few years ago. In my case, it turned out to be some abnormal cells that the doctor wanted to remove. The doc assured me that they weren't 'cancerous,' just 'abnormal,' and he wanted to remove them to avoid possible future problems. I had an in-office procedure called 'LEEP' -- they freeze the cells and remove them. I was scared, but the procedure was fairly quick (I was in there for an hour, and most of that hour was waiting in the lobby!) and (honestly!) no more painful than your average gyno visit. I was fine almost immediately afterwards, too. Afterwards, I needed a check up every six months until I had three normal test results in a row. And that happened right away -- I've been fine ever since (knock wood!). And my doctor told me that the procedure causes no risk to fertility.

So, even if the test came up abnormal because of real abnormal cells, things can be just fine!

This sounds like my experience WORD for WORD .. I also had LEEP as a result of an abnormal pap test, back when I was about 22 yrs old.. subsequently ever since that procedure, I go to my gyno 2x a year and I haven't had an abnormal pap result since! Things have been 100% A-OK.

But I certainly don't blame anyone for getting concerned and upset when they get that call that their pap test came back 'abnormal ' .. your first instinct is to think CANCER , its only human. But once you read about it and educate yourself, you start to realize this is VERY common. And there are so many ways to resolve an abnormal pap (and so many false negatives that sometimes the answer is to wait a few month and be tested again) that there really isn't much cause for serious concern. Its actually much better that the abnormal cells are caught so early, because it means they haven't had any chance to develop into anything serious!

To AliciaHelene and the rest of you gals, many .. its 100% treatable and you will be perfectly FINE once the procedure is done
