My MIL took the cards/envelopes out of our birdcage near the end of the night... she was afraid that someone was gonna take them.
So today, 2 days after the wedding, hubby asked his dad for them.... it turned out that they opened all of the cards/envelopes! Took all the cash/checks out... kept a log... and wrote on the cards themselves how much the person gave. Not on the envelope the card came in but on the inside, where ppl wrote messages for us!!!! I'm so upset! I wanted to keep the cards and read them in years to come... now each time I open them, there's this figure written in the middle on how much they gave and in what form they gave it in!!!!!

OMG First of all I think that is sooo rude. Those were gifts from your Family and his to the both of you not them I would be pissed i would have said something in a nice way but I would say something ... WOW

How dare they? I am so sorry. I am sure they were just trying to make sure that everyone treated you well and they had good intentions, but they definitely overstepped a boundary. It is your wedding, not theirs! Geez....

OMG, that is so wrong.... at least they gave you the cash though!
I've heard of a couple whose parents not just opened the evelope but kept the cash for themselves! And it's not like the parents paid for the wedding!

Hey... isn't is against the law to open up someone else's mail??? Sorry.. I couldn't resist... that is really wrong that they opened the cards. At least if they wanted to help you they could have asked before they took the liberty of doing it!

I guess it is! The girl was too embarassed to ask her parents for the money, I guess the old-fashioned parents see it as their daughter's dowry. :P

That is SO wrong. I would be pissed cause it is none of their business how much anyone gave, but also cause they robbed you of the joy of opening each card yourself.

Here is my advise, you and your FH will have to have it out with your In-laws. Make your point accross right away. If you don't do this right away they will step all over you for the rest of your marriage. Even if she hates you, throws a fit, insist whatever the heck she wants, she has no right to violate your privacy. Oh and that nonsense that its the law! Tell her to go find you that in writting. That is complete BS. I wouldn't take that from anyone. But thank you for posting, now I know I need to defently have someone I trust 100% to take care of gift cards!
