I'm thinking about donating to charity instead of giving out favors. Any feedback?

Re: In Lieu of Favors
Many girls on this board who are doing the donations instead of favors are also giving out something small, such as chocolates.

It is a great idea. I am doing this along with giving out something small (not sure what I am doing, I am actually researching right now). We are probably making a donation to The American Cancer Society.

Re: In Lieu of Favors
I can't really come up with something small to give in addition - I want to stay away from sweets. My donation is going to be made to American Diabetes Assoc. - I'm diabetic. Any suggestions?

Re: In Lieu of Favors
that's what we did! We had a sign near our table explaining what we did and my SIL made chocolates which were on each place setting.

You could do the picture frame place cards

Re: In Lieu of Favors
A friend donated to Breast Cancer - she made a scroll that was placed on all of the plates stating that a donation has been made their name in honor of her mother, etc. If you call the charity, they might even have cards to hand out.

I am donating to charity and we're making up cards which we will put our ribbom on it (the one with our name and date) and put them on each guests plate. I think it's such a useful idea, only because every favor I've received I've put in the drawer and forgot about it. JMO

I really think that is the route that I am going to go? I'm not a fan of favors either. I think alot of people will appreciate not having to take home something they will never use.

just make sure if you do a donation that its a reputable company. i've heard some sad stories working in the social work field about people using the money for personal use.

Re: In Lieu of Favors
I'm making donations to two charities and not giving favors. I did find really cute placecard holders, but they're not even remotely functional for most everyday things and I don't consider them a favor. I'm making scrolls with a note to all of our guests explaining why we chose to make donations in their honor. I have a post here somewhere with the wording I used, but I'd have to find it.

Re: In Lieu of Favors
I was thinking of doing the same, but was 'reminded' that a charitable deed is not supposed to be 'announced'. So I think we will make a donation, not have favors, and keep it to ourselves.

I like this idea and I just did some research on it. I found two great causes to donate to. I am going to have the silverbox placecards that double as a photo holder. So that could work as a favor, too...right? Hmm, I will definitely look into this. TY for the ideas.
ps..new fav icon , did not need to use it in this post, but it is too cute not to!!

Re: In Lieu of Favors
I am making a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. I made up these scrolls: .They are going to be attached to a box of candies (ironic!). I think it looks really cute. Some charities will supply scrolls but you have to donate over a certain amount... I think $5 per person in our case but we are doing $2 per person.

AHH, you have been hanging out with my FH, eh?? If you keep it to yourself it means more and when you have to announce it then it loses something. It's about humility and something else, I usually tune him out right about now. I will tell him that his speech did not fall upon deaf ears with you!

Re: In Lieu of Favors
I like the idea of making a donation. We will be doing that for the American Cancer Society...mostly bc we both know people who have suffered at the hands of cancer, so it had affected us both......most recently a family acquaintance who passed away the day after we got engaged. Life is short........and it is just a SMALL token to remind us all. (we will also tie some candy into this somehow, prob. attached to scroll........)
