In Memoriam: Remember 9/11 -- Post your thoughts, memories, and memorials to get thru today

Morning ladies,
Today is 9/11 as we all know, and I just wanted to open up a thread for anyone who may feel like remembering a friend or loved one...or just offer your thoughts or even vent about your emotions on this day.

For me, I shed a tear today for the thousands of people affected by this tragedy....the more than 3,200 children who lost a parent 5 yrs. ago, and the hundreds of NYPD & FDNY who lost their lives.

If you've lost a loved one to this day--please post their name and to remember them.

ETA: As long as we all remember together our fellow human beings, and the spirit of this country's solidarity on that tragic day lives on....the cowards who caused this act, will NEVER win.

I'm glad people are finding an outlet with this thread. Let's try and keep it on top today! We can all take about cakes, gowns, limos, flowers, etc. any day of the week--but I think it's important to take a second a post a thought on a day that we know we will remember for the rest of our lives!

Just checking on here for this post.

I am truly truly sad today. I am also a bit angry at CNN for replaying the coverage of the day in real time. That can only have a negative effect on people's mental health.

Growing up in New York and living in Arlington-where the Pentagon is (not DC!) and working 9-11 mental health response for over three years all make my emotions truly raw still (as I know is the same for so many others).

May everyone find some peace today or whatever they need.

I almost lost my MOH 5 years ago. She was in the North tower at the B&N trying to buy her college books. I'm glad that she didn't listen to the announcements and instead listened to her gut and got out of there. I know that it's not the same thing as loosing a loved one. My prayers go out to all those to gave their lives to save others, and to those who lost their lives due to evil men and their evil plans.

I just wish the media would tone down all the TV specials and movies. Yes, this day needs to be remembered, and well as all those who lost their lives, but it should not be done in a flurry of shows, but in a tasteful somber way.

It is still gut wrenching to see the images of that day. I was watching coverage on the news this morning while I was getting ready for work and I started to cry. It's amazing how real and raw the emotions still are, even though I didn't personally know anyone who was lost that day.
I love the USA.

Today when I dropped FH off at the train station I kissed him a little bit longer and I said 'I Love You.' I thought about all the loved ones who may not have gotten a chance to do that 5 years ago today.
My heart goes out to everyone who lost someone. They will never be forgotten!

Time does nothing for me. Everyone says that time heals and takes away the pain but it has done nothing. Five years feels like five minutes. I was lucky enough to not know anyone personally who passed away that day but I feel there is a hole in my heart forever for my City. New York is and always will be my home and to think that it could be attacked is sickening. I see my brother and father (who are policemen) in the faces of all those brave rescue workers. I see my cousin (who is a firefighter) in the faces of all the firemen that day. I see my fellow New Yorkers in the faces of the victims that day and I see myself in each and every victim... just an innocent person either going to work or going about their business. It's something that I will never, ever forget and the pain I feel for others who are so deeply affected by 9/11 will always be there.

God Bless America and all of it's loyal citizens. We will never forget those lost that day and the families/loved ones of those who passed away. I will always be so thankful for the brave troops who are over in the Middle East fighting for our freedom and fighting against terrorism and senseless hatred. I look forward to one day living without a sense of fear but it won't come easy-- we need to stay strong and united. Then, we will have peace and then we will be able to ensure a safer world for our children... 'Hope is a key word in the vocabulary of men and women like myself and so many others who discovered in America the strength to overcome cynicism and despair. Remember the legendary Pandora's box? It is filled with implacable, terrifying curses. But underneath, at the very bottom, there is hope. Now as before, now more than ever, it is waiting for us.' -E. Weisel

I completely agree. My husband worked in the hot zone on Broadway, but not close enough to be in grave danger. I was home sick from work that day and was relaying information to get he and his mother in one spot so they could walk across the bridge so his Dad could pick them up.

DH lost his job because it was a retail store that was closed to foot traffic for weeks and they couldn't keep everyone when they weren't making any money.

A guy in my department was in the towers that day, got out in time, but knows many that did not. To hear him retell his memories of that day is chilling. And I, too, cry each and every time I see the towers.

There is a song by Coldplay that is my favorite off their last album called 'Fix You'. It's lyrics are simple but the song has always had a big effect on me, it's very powerful.

When you try your best but you don't succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse.

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream, down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I..

Tears stream, down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I..

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you.

I heard the bolded portions in the background of a trailer for the 9/11 movie with Nicholas Cage and now, I can't listen to this song without associating it and feeling sad and teary.

I'm just so glad you ladies can relate. I've been a member of another online community for years and considered these people my friends. But when it comes to this, they just don't understand. Mostly because they're not here, they didn't grow up here, they can't relate.

But it's satisfying to share all this with you, because you understand. You understand how it's ok to be this upset 'even if' you didn't lose someone that day. You don't have to know a victim personally in order to feel this, and to feel the enormous sense of loss.

Re: In Memoriam: Remember 9/11 -- Post your thoughts, memories, and memorials to get thru today

I was upstate in college when the attacks happened and to not be able to be with my family here on Long Island was the worst part for me. All of the phone lines were so tied up that no one could call onto campus or off campus, so not only was I away but I was out of contact as well. That day taught us not to take anything for granted.

I'm so touched by the compassion people showed that day and continue to show today. My heart breaks when I think of those people who strived to live and those who had to leave friends and families behind.

I was watching a documentary last night on channel 2 (it was truly gut-wrenching...) and one of the fire-fighters made a statement, that it was so tough to be a survivor, the guilt he felt for surviving when so many people died... we need to celebrate the survivors, they are our true heros...

I was fortunate not to lose anyone that day, but I was living on Staten Island at the time and was able to see everything from across the harbor. It was so terrifying, but it brought the whole country together. Let's never forget the victims or our patriotism! God Bless America!!

My cousin's DH is in the Army and stationed in Iraq right now, I pray for him to come home safely!!! I'm not sure of his rank, but his name is Chris Hollywood.

Did everyone remember to fly a flag at home today? I hung my flag of Heros with the names of all the 9/11 victims on it.

I was actually really annoyed on my drive thru my neighborhood to get to work this morning. I only saw 2, 2! flags flying in my whole neighborhood. FH and I fly our flag 365 days a years and because the entrance to our apt. is in the back you aren't really able to see it from the street, but it's there. As for everyone else is the neighborhood, I was really upset to see that not everyone had the common sense to raise a flag.
