In Memoriam: Remember 9/11 -- Post your thoughts, memories, and memorials to get thru today

Original post by MJDoc12

Morning ladies,
Today is 9/11 as we all know, and I just wanted to open up a thread for anyone who may feel like remembering a friend or loved one...or just offer your thoughts or even vent about your emotions on this day.

For me, I shed a tear today for the thousands of people affected by this tragedy....the more than 3,200 children who lost a parent 5 yrs. ago, and the hundreds of NYPD & FDNY who lost their lives.

If you've lost a loved one to this day--please post their name and to remember them.

ETA: As long as we all remember together our fellow human beings, and the spirit of this country's solidarity on that tragic day lives on....the cowards who caused this act, will NEVER win.

I'm glad people are finding an outlet with this thread. Let's try and keep it on top today! We can all take about cakes, gowns, limos, flowers, etc. any day of the week--but I think it's important to take a second a post a thought on a day that we know we will remember for the rest of our lives!

I WORK IN A CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH AGENCY WHICH HAS PROVIDED MUCH OF THE BEREAVEMENT COUNSELING FOR THE FAMILIES OF 9/11. THIS MORNING WE HAD A MEMORIAL SERVICE. IT WAS MOVING. I BEGAN TO THINK OFTHAT DAY (9/11) AND HOW I WAS AN INNOCENT CHILD. THAT DAY, MADE MANY OF US LOSE OUR INNOCENCE. I REMEMBER HAVING A PROFESSOR WHO SAID TO OUR CLASS (SEVERAL WEEKS AFTER), '9/11 CHANGED OUR LIVES BUT WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. THIS IS THE DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR GENERATION' 5 YEARS LATER I'M FINISHING MY MASTERS IN SOCIAL WORK AND HOPE TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE COUNSELING FOR FAMILIES THAT HAVE BEEN THROUGH TRAUMA. IT WAS A DEFINING MOMENT FOR ME AND OTHERS. MANY HORRIBLE THINGS CAME OUT OF 9/11 (AND WE GRIEVE FOR EVERYONE THAT THE WORLD LOST) HOWEVER MANY BEAUTIFUL THINGS CAME OUT OF IT AS WELL. TODAY, I MOURN THE SOULS LOST BUT ALSO TRY TO LOOK AT THE AMAZING STORIES OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT THAT CAME OUT OF IT. ON THAT DAY, WE EACH FOUND A STRENGTH THAT WE MIGHT HAVE NOT KNOWN EXISTED. WITH LOVE!

Time does nothing for me. Everyone says that time heals and takes away the pain but it has done nothing. Five years feels like five minutes. I was lucky enough to not know anyone personally who passed away that day but I feel there is a hole in my heart forever for my City. New York is and always will be my home and to think that it could be attacked is sickening. I see my brother and father (who are policemen) in the faces of all those brave rescue workers. I see my cousin (who is a firefighter) in the faces of all the firemen that day. I see my fellow New Yorkers in the faces of the victims that day and I see myself in each and every victim... just an innocent person either going to work or going about their business. It's something that I will never, ever forget and the pain I feel for others who are so deeply affected by 9/11 will always be there.

God Bless America and all of it's loyal citizens. We will never forget those lost that day and the families/loved ones of those who passed away. I will always be so thankful for the brave troops who are over in the Middle East fighting for our freedom and fighting against terrorism and senseless hatred. I look forward to one day living without a sense of fear but it won't come easy-- we need to stay strong and united. Then, we will have peace and then we will be able to ensure a safer world for our children... 'Hope is a key word in the vocabulary of men and women like myself and so many others who discovered in America the strength to overcome cynicism and despair. Remember the legendary Pandora's box? It is filled with implacable, terrifying curses. But underneath, at the very bottom, there is hope. Now as before, now more than ever, it is waiting for us.' -E. Weisel

This article brings me some sense of hope and comfort

very well said...

Rest in Peace Officer Glen Pettit who was a photograher where I worked at the time, at News 12, and was part of the video unit for the NYPD. He was last seen going downstairs in one of the towers with a video camera on his shoulder. His partner got out. He didn't. They actually thought they found him and called his poor family to the hospital to come get him, and when they got there, it wasn't him. Those poor parents... at his memorial, two weeks later, when they still hadn't found him, his mom kept telling everyone that she would see us at his Welcome Home party. .

For my memories... I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was a traffic reporter for News 12's morning show, which had just ended that Tuesday morning. I remember, just after 9am, wrapping up my mic and IFB cord and walking into my office and hearing Brian, the chopper guy, screaming into the two-way, 'Guys - there's a huge whole in the side of the World Trade Center! Guys, this is HUGE! A plane has crashed into the World Trade Center'. I ran and told my producer at News 12 and I still had to do a report on Island 94.3 at this point, who hadn't heard about it, so I broke the news live on air, and remember my voice shaking knowing my dad was in Manhattan somewhere (I later found out that he was in upper Manhattan, thank God). I remember the DJ on Island 94.3 kind of blowing off the importance of what I just said, thinking it must be just an accident or something and saying 'How's the traffic?'... so I went on to talk about really unimportant delays on the Southern State or something, knowing the world just changed. So much for my News 12 shift just ending... in reality, it just began. I ended up being on the air until about 10 that night. I remember sitting at the anchor desk, live on air, during the most pertinent moments of the morning and being on-camera while reports were coming in that a plane crashed into the Pentagon and another into a field in Pennsylvania. I remember saying on the air that it seems nowhere is safe - and being scared to death. We were under attack. I remember thinking it felt like 'War of the Worlds'. I remember being on camera when the towers fell - and not being able to believe my eyes. I remember how hard it was to hold back the tears, while trying to be a professional on the air. l remember going on the air constantly and telling people that New York City was CLOSED. i remember the pictures of people WALKING over the bridges, covered in dust, out of New York City. I remember having to plead to all Long Islanders to stay off the highways, and keep them clear for emergency personnel only. I remember how scary my highway cameras looked with just the left land open for cars with emergency lights rushing into the city. I remember certain Long Island cameras being able to catch the smoke billowing from the city. I remember having to go in the days after 9-11 for marathon reports. I remember security being so tight at the crossings and everyone being okay with that, knowing it was for their safety. I remember hearing reports of one incident on the George Washington Bridge of another incident that was stopped that the world will never know about because that would just increase the fear and I thank God that we are so protected since 9-11 that we don't even know how many terror threats have been thwarted. I remember feeling proud to be an American, proud to see the American flags flying proudly, proud to see the President standing with the firefighter on the rubble at Ground Zero speaking into the bullhorn saying that the people who tore down these buildings will hear all of us soon. I remember being scared to see only military planes flying overhead, having nightmares for weeks after 9-11, knowing that those who did this have to pay and knowing that America has to go on the offensive against terror and its supporters so that this country and future generations never face another 9-11 again.

God Bless America. Fly your flag proudly EVERYDAY. Never forget.

I work in the city and as I got on the LIRR this morning I couldn't help but think about all the people who did the same thing today five years ago and never came home. It breaks my heart to know that and I will never forget those who lost their lives that horrible day.

To all those who have lost someone they loved that day my heart goes out to you.

This is a day everyone will never forget...especially us New Yorkers.
My uncle is in the FDNY E ngine 54.Ladder 4 in Midtow and he didn't work that day but was supposed to. He lost 15 men in his firehouse including the hero who worked for him that morning.
I will never forget watching from across the river in the conference room @ work and the second plane hitting the tower and then both towers falling.
It was a very scary day.
Today I will keep everyone in my prayers weather wheather you lost someone or not, it is a very emotional day and I hope everyone had a 'good' day!!!

I thought I would be able to get through today with no tears but I just watched a tribute to 9/11 at half time of the football game and lost it. Although I did not lose anyone that day I still feel like something is missing. God Bless America and my heart goes out to everyone who has lost someone from this horrible tragedy.

We will all survive and prove that NY can never be brought down.

I would also like to remind everyone on this day to keep in memory and pray for all those men and woman who have lost their life fighting for our freedom overseas. They may not have died on 9-11, but they died because of 9-11.
