From experience I can say that an updo looks much nicer and shinier if you wash it the night before. And this is from someone whose hair gets washed every day with no exceptions. For my prom (9 years ago- I cant believe that) I had my hair done twice, one for my prom and once for my boyfriend at the times prom. Once I washed it the night before, once the morning of. It looked sooo much better for the one that I didnt the night before.

You are NOT supposed to wash your hair on the morning of. Wash it the night/day before and thats it. Its easier to style when it is partly dirty.
ETA: My stylist told me that if I wash it, she will have to spend 45 minutes dirtying it up..spraying hair spray and crap in it. I would rather wash it the night before and save myself the time.
