Re: In ShoCk!!!

i had the same problem...

but we had an e-party neways and pretty much only invited his family and my immidiate b/c mine are out of state. No one brought ne gifts except my parents and sisters and a few parents friends that sent them along. I never expect gifts from anyone but Fh family had no idea.. they even brought thier own chairs! lol. we rented pretty white ones and we told them that when asked but apparently didnt believe us.

FH family does live in a bubble, they know nothing outside thier hometown... lol ok that sounded mean.. i do like them!

this NY/ LI wedding is going to be over the top for them no matter what i do.. lol. just having a CH and open bar will be a shock

Re: In ShoCk!!!

honestly, it's an LI thing.... FH's family never heard of it either, his sister didn't have one, they actually told me that it comes off as selfish because it's just more gifts that people have to buy.

for that reason we did it a casual backyard party and we wrote 'No Gifts' on the invite , we could've cared less about presents, we just wanted to celebrate with our friends and family. Of course, a few stubborn people brought gifts anyway.

I wouldn't worry about it. Just have fun celebrating, (all attention will be on you anyway!)

oh and his parents did get us a gift, but it was a small one- it was a bible and a wall art that says 'All because two people fell in love' (his parents have this so it meant something). They hosted the party for us though and spent a lot of $$ on it so I'm surprised they got us anything!

anyone?

IMO, an eparty isnt necessary and neither are gifts... Guests already give so much just for 1 person's wedding so I can see why some of the fam may be about it

Re: In ShoCk!!!

IMO I feel like an engagement party is another way to get gifts or money so we did not have one I think its a little much to have a Eparty, shower, and wedding ! its one more gift people have to give

Re: In ShoCk!!!

I've NEVER been to an e-party and I'm 32 and pretty much all of my friends are married. I think the first time I heard of an e-party was from a former co-worker who was from NJ who went to one.

FH and I decided not to have one because we thought it wasn't necessary...it's just more $$ we would have had to spend, even if people gave gifts. Plus we felt that was just another gift our guests would have to give and felt it was too much. Not to mention that I had never even been to one so I really didn't want one to begin with.

My family pretty much all have eparties and the parents throw it for the bride and groom. FH's family- some do and some don't. EVERYONE gave a gift and some ppl who couldn't make it, even sent gifts! We got some registry gifts, but mostly cash/checks.

I didnt even have an eparty and people send us stuff!! I did have a dinner with our immediate family and our bm and moh...everyone got us a little something, but that wasnt what we did it for....
I know a lot of people who had epartys that were like weddings....

Re: In ShoCk!!!

Im sure no one will like this but I know alot of people who dont know what and eparty is. We didnt have one b/c we felt it was greedy to do so.

You get gifts for your eparty, then your shower, then your BP is expected to pay for your bparty then you get gifts from the wedding....not somehting I was interested in doing.

To each his own I guess

My family in New Mexico had no idea what an e-party was...I think only 1 aunt sent a card. I didn't care, I barely speak to them anyways. But yeah, e-party's aren't soooo common now that EVERYONE knows what to do, ya know??

Re: In ShoCk!!!

Yeah, I had to step out of the bubble I live in to attend a few e-parties...

my family just don't do them & I just don't get them.

unless of course it's like a small bbq in a back yard/ small dinner with close family type thing... these EXTRAVAGANT ones in reception halls with flowers, registries, seating charts, DJs... pretty much everything you would have at a WEDDING, to me.. is greedy. IMO of course.

sorry if this offends anyone

While I would never attend a party without bringing a gift, I just think that a lot of people don't understand the need for an e party when a big wedding is following.

I have no advice to give you to help increase your chances of receiving a gift, sorry.

Usually if a couple has a longer engagement(ie: 2yrs +) that's when i've been to e-parties.. my family doesn't really do them either but my MIL wanted to throw us one. We were only having a year engagement, so neither me, my dh or my mom felt super comfortable inviting the world..so we kept it really small with just immediate family & bridal party. not even close friends. It ended up being really nice, and we got a couple nice gifts. Your wedding isn't untill 2010 so i can see having one..but once ur a year away i think it's a little silly if its anything more that close family.

i am having a luncheon with just our immediate family (aunts uncle, cousins, etc). I think it is a nice way for our families to get introduced. Also i think that its nice to have our long engagment broken up by an event! (i got engaged in april, my eparty will be March 2009 and my wedding is june 2010).

i dont need your advice on 'recieving a gift' because this is NOT what the post was about!!

Re: In ShoCk!!!

Apparantly none of our family members had heard of one, and therefore NOBODY with the exception of Fh's mom, 3 aunts and uncles and our bridal party gave us anything. The worse part is that his grandmother even told us... don't expect any gifts from us b.c we don't give gifts for those things.... I told her I didnt need her gifts and to enjoy her free meal that FH and I paid for.
