Apparantly none of our family members had heard of one, and therefore NOBODY with the exception of Fh's mom, 3 aunts and uncles and our bridal party gave us anything. The worse part is that his grandmother even told us... don't expect any gifts from us b.c we don't give gifts for those things.... I told her I didnt need her gifts and to enjoy her free meal that FH and I paid for.

i can careless about the gifts but i guess im living in a bubble expecting that everyone knew what a e party is... i dunno... whatever i think im gonna have one anyway

Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed today??

Re: In ShoCk!!!

My parents threw us one back in January (we never asked for it... they just thought it would be fun ...it was a christmas present to us !!!)

We invited only family, my parents close friends and the bridal party (came out to 80 people) and we had it in a Irish pub/restaurant right by my house that had a side room for parties...the centerpieces were our favors (little shot glasses full of heart candy) and the music was from my i-pod ...

we got alot of really nice presents and were able to put a down payment on our DJ and photo...

it was nothing fancy but alot of fun !!!! Plus our families had never met ... so it was nice to see everyone get togehter

We had a 150 people in my in-laws backyard and had a luau! It was sooo much fun! It was just a nice fun BBQ with all our friends and family (LOTS OF FAMILY) and we drank and ate and laughed, everyone met, it all worked out!

Im sure no one will like this but I know alot of people who dont know what and eparty is. We didnt have one b/c we felt it was greedy to do so.

You get gifts for your eparty, then your shower, then your BP is expected to pay for your bparty then you get gifts from the wedding....not somehting I was interested in doing.

To each his own I guess

E-parties are very common in my circle and even when someone doesn't have an e-party if they are your good friend, it is pretty likely that you would get them an engagement gift anyway to congratulate them. I don't see our e-party as greedy but rather a chance to celebrate our engagement with friends and family. We're not asking for gifts but rather asking our friends to come by and celebrate for a few hours. Besides, as for the greedy aspect, the party is costing our family a few thousand dollars so having a party is (financially speaking) a better deal for our friends and a worse deal for us. At least now, our friends get a fun party along with their gift!!

I do however agree that having a huge, psuedo wedding e-party could be a bit much to some people. Ours is just a small house party.

Re: In ShoCk!!!

Honestly- in my family and culture engagement parties are like mini weddings and it is etiquette to bring a gift so for this girl to expect gifts to me isn't a huge deal at all... everyone is different and is brought up into different ideas, cultures, etc. so, to you what may seem materialistic and rude is common to someone else. my FH's family is very narrow minded (not in a bad way per say) however they too were not sure what an engagement party was and although i did not expect gifts from them (bc how are they supposed to know when they've never heard of one) i was hoping that they would make the effort to at least ask if it was a part of my culture to do so since i spent 5grand on the party and it wasn't just a little thing. like i said everyone and their lives are different and i totally understand where you are coming from and i do not think you are being selfish at all!
