Now that my health insurance will be cutting off as of 8/31 and no job prospect in site, I'm wondering if what I'm hearing is true. A few people have told me that since we live together & our wedding isn't very far away that FH is able to put me under his insurance plan. Is there any truth to this matter? Thanks so much.

Re: Insurance Q girls: Medical HELP
I can't say for sure but I don't think FI can put you on his insurance unless his company is in open enrollment (which for most companies is sometime in december) or Life changing event (marriage is considered one). Hope this helps.

But he'd be able to in December?

Re: Insurance Q girls: Medical HELP
My insurance company and employer allows this. We have Oxford freedom plan. I remember a friend of mine did this for her husband BEFORE they were married.

Usually you have to wait until you're married. Unless his company has a domestic partner policy that includes opposite sex partners. Most do not.
Can you do COBRA? It's expensive but at least it's coverage.

some policy allow you to list your domestic partner but part of the problem is, some companies only allow a change at enrolment time, he would have to check
the key word right now is domestic partner and check enrollment time

you may also want to try (even if you know you can't) have a legal change. Tell them you were employed but lost the job and somtimes, health care providres allow for exceptions like that...

Re: Insurance Q girls: Medical HELP
depends on the company. I use to work for Chase and I was able to add him to my insurance and then when I went to AMerican Express you have to be married.. so each company is different . tell hom to call HR

Yes you can get added. There are some details that have to be in place. You don't have to wait until open enrollment if you had a qualifying event. In your case, you are losing coverage and that is a qualifying event. Let him get the details from his employer and he can probably get you added quickly.

I'm only familiar with the Vytra HealthyNY and BC/BS HealthyNY, and they have terrible coverage. I don't think I would go that way, Cin.
I think it IS possible to have your FH add you - my FH is going to add me next Feb, when my benefits expire.

Are you able to get Cobra from your current insurance to cover you until the wedding?
If not, Family Health Plus or Healthy NY is a low cost option.
Otherwise, I'm sure you would have to wait until open enrollment.

Re: Insurance Q girls: Medical HELP
I guess I'm just confused HOW he can add me if we aren't married. Wouldn't everyone do this?
I am covered by COBRA, but that is over $400. a month...pretty steep, especially if I'll only be subbing or temping.
Also, if he gets me on his coverage and then I get employed fulltime would he be able to leave me on his coverage?

Re: Insurance Q girls: Medical HELP
Good questions.
A lot of plans these days have a domestic partner provision in the plan so people who are together but not married can get their SO coverage. There are rules about it, so you have to check it out to be sure.
Cobra is just outrageous. If your FH doesn't have that provision in his plan, then it looks like that may have to do.
Also when you get a job and get coverage you may stay on his plan if you want or you can get insurance from your job and then his insurance will be secondary to yours. That's a little confusing, but people do this so they can be 100% covered if their plan doesn't cover certain things.

Re: Insurance Q girls: Medical HELP
Tell your FH to check with his HR department and find out if he can add you to his insurance as a Domestic Parter. Some companies allow this, some don't. If you have a qualifying status change, ie. your coverage elsewhere is ending, you should be able to enroll into the plan w/o a problem.
If not you can always elect COBRA.

Re: Insurance Q girls: Medical HELP
My sister was able to put her fiancee on her insurance. But every company is different. You should have your FH look into it for you. Good luck

Re: Insurance Q girls: Medical HELP
I work in the city, for the city (NYPD) and I was able to do this for my FH. But you have to prove that you live together, and show a utility bill with both your names in it. I know everywhere does it differently, but just wanted to let you know....
Good Luck!!

Re: Insurance Q girls: Medical HELP
As long as you are living together he can add you as his domestic partner. He will need to show bills that come to the same address under both names.
