I watched a CNN speical last night about a fake situation in 2009

there was a cat 5 hurrican in Texas- halting oil production - followed by a Terroirst attack on the suadi oil feilds

it was pretty bleak- we are basically screwed if something like this ever happed

we are too dependent on oil

yes we ARE! why are we allowing our lives to be run by the middle east? something should have been done about this YEARS ago!

ETA: what I mean about them running our lives is not only do we need gas to get to work, but think of everything else that needs oil and natural gas! when oil goes up, so does everything else. think about how much it will cost to heat your homes next winter

My dad owns a trucking company and people have been irrate with him over the past year b/c he's had to raise their rates, which means of course, we have to pay more for what his co. delivers to us.....on the radio yesterday they were spouting off gas prices globally, in italy (i think) it was like 5/gallon!! BUT in venezuela (sp??) it's $.14/gallon...fourteen cents!!!

this is all absolutely ridiculous...FH and i watched hide and seek over the weekend (a fairly new movie) and deniro was pumping gas....1.79 for regular...i almost fell off the couch!!! i'd kill for that again and that was a rip off!!

That's an OPEC country for you! Gallon of gas there costs as much as a pack of gum here.

I just think it is sad that we are so dependent on oil and the prices keep rising and it is detrimental to the environment, and yet the government doesn't put the $$$ that is needed into alterative fuel development. Instead that $$ goes into subsidies for oil -

Some politicians are too connected to the oil industry - they aren't concerned about alternative fuel sources.

yeah I don't see that changing anytime soon - which makes me SO mad cause the potential for hydro, solar and wind power is so vast. Hopefully car companies will at least put $$$ into more alternative fuel research, as hybrid cars gain popularity with the rising gas prices.

and NASA...WHY does nasa get 100s billions to waste on rockets visiting other planets that we can never actually go to (like jupiter) at all and yet things like this go on, or worse, schools, health insurance.....i'll jump off my soapbox, but NASA is truly disturbing when you think about it.

Venezuela is a very poor country! They might be able to get gas for pennies, but keep in mind that they have to pay a lot more for things we don’t. additionally, 14 cents to you and I is not 14 cents to them. it is much more.

and it italy they buy gas by the liter- much smaller then a gallon- so I am sure it's more then $5 a gallon there- it's normally $7- Europe has always paid way more then us for gas ( petro)

that is because European governments don't offer subsidies on gasoline - whereas US does. We don't pay the 'real' cost of gas - we play only a portion of the cost due to the subsidies. That is why Europe is so much greener than US - the consumers are willing to buy smaller cars, smartcars, take trains/buses/metro due to the higher gas prices.

The quality of life for most Europeans is not like it is here for us. They have must lower standards. Not saying that in a bad way, they’re just not materialistic like Americans are. They need less to be happy is what I am trying to say.

We are spoiled rotten (me too) and we like to whine when we have to pay more for gas. It stinks because our economy is finally doing well again, but it will suffer an impact if oil keeps rising.
