Interfaith Ceremony

Original post by Danielle&Scott

Hey everyone....Its so hard to please everyone. My fiancee is Catholic and I am Jewish. She wants to light unity candles, and have someone do a reading...which is fine with me. She asked me to find someone to do a reading, and i didnt know who I wanted to do it...So I asked my mom and she told me it was against the Jewish religion to have someone to a reading. Is this true? I never heard this before.

Im not very religious. My family is reformed. I dont really go to temple but my family does. So I dont really know what the jewish religion will let you do and not do at a wedding.

If there is anyone that has had an interfaith wedding....Please give me some info.

Also i suggested that we get a person to do an interfaith ceremony instead of getting a rabbi and a priest. The rabbi and the priest want $500 each. Thats crazy. I dont think she is going to go for that....

I want our wedding to be very special for her....and I dont want her to be aggrivated or stressed out...but i feel like I am making her aggrivated and stressed out.....

What do i do?

Re: Interfaith Ceremony

I am not having an interfaith wedding, but I have been to quite a few. I have seen both parents stand, the unity candle, a ceremony with a bible signing & the blessings. I beleive they broke the glass & there was a chuppa. As for the readings, as far as I can recall from the most recent one, the rabbi read from the OT, and the bride's godmother read from the NT. The couple had the ceremony & reception in the same location, so both the rabbi & minister also did a blessing before people ate.

I also want to say that I think it is great that you are taking such care in providing the best day for your bride. Good luck to you both

Re: Interfaith Ceremony

We had an interfaith ceremony (Protestant and Jewish) and we had a reading and a unity candle lighting. We had the mothers come up and light DH's and my candle, then we lit the unity candle together. My stepmother did the reading. It was a nice way to incorporate all of the mothers into the ceremony. I also want to add that the rabbi suggested the candle idea with the mothers and she asked us if we want readings and helped us choose our readings.

Re: Interfaith Ceremony

Well I spoke to my mother tonight about the wedding and I told her that Danielle and I might have two people do a reading. One from her side of the family and one person from my side of the family. I told her that my person would read from the old testament and she was ok with it. I also told her that we would be doing the toast over the wine, lighting the unity candles, and breaking the glass at the end of the ceremony.

We had a long conversation and the outcome is that she is fine with everything. I told her that there is going to be alot of decisions to make for our wedding and some of them she wont like...She said she knows that, and that she is happy for me, because she knows how happy Danielle makes me feel....and she is happy that i am marrying her.
