Re: Interracial Marriages

That' funny becase we never have any one say things to us out of state. Only in Manhattan twice. I thought that was so odd becsue you would think NYC is one of the most diverse cities on the planet.

I have never had anyone say anything to us that didn't know us!!!! I would be pissed off!!!!!!!
I do get stares from African American and Hispanic women though! FH never noticed it until recently!

I did. My family never had any problem. If they did they know better than to say something to me. I think it's much different for our generation.

Leslie - Just had to shot out and say your baby is truely beautiful - mix is good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awwww, thank you sweetie (and my munchkin thanks you too).

(FH's friends call him 'Denzel Lite' since his Dad looks so much like him. )

I was looking at your photo album and your FH DOES look like Denzel...I had to look a few times to make sure it wasn't him!
My FH says he looks like Dennis Haysebert(sp?)~ the guy who plays the President from seasons 1-4 of 24..he's also the All State commerical guy ('Are you in good hands?')

I have to second that your son is too adorable~!

Re: Interracial Marriages

Although I never married him, ( thank god) my sons father is Puerto Rican. My son Lucas is as gorgeous as EVER. My family DID have a hard time with me being pregnant and engaged to someone of a different race, but saw the wonderful person he was AT THE TIME. Now a days I'm marrying outside of my race. Darren is Spaniard & Domenican. His mother is from Spain, and his father from DR. This time my family knows he's the one, and are fully content with our relationship. Not to mention, our son is Domenican, Spaniard, Italian and German. Going to be just as gorgeous as Lucas!!

Re: Interracial Marriages

I am so happy for all of you ladies!

If there is anyone out there that is an interracial couple and is maybe a little ashamed of their family's reaction. . .

My sister is Sicilian and her husband is Jamaican. . . they met like 15 years ago and got married 10 years ago. ..

my parents were HORRENDOUS. . . i am ashamed to say. . . my sister planned the wedding on her own, my parents did not talk to her for two years even though she lived in the house with us

we planned a PERFECT wedding, me, my brother and all my cousins secretly helped her. . .

About a month before the wedding my parents realized they were losing their oldest ( and BEST!) daughter and WOKE UP. . . .they met my BIL, LOVED HIM, and came to my sister's wedding!

Now, I have a gorgeous niece and nephew, my parents are the proudest grandparents ever and my BIL turned out to be the BEST son in law ever. . .

they will never gain back those two lost years. . . but they eventually realized they were wrong and i am very proud of them for that!

Just wanted to share a little story of hope if anyone is having problems with their families!

Re: Interracial Marriages

Thinking about what Matilde just wrote makes me feel very blessed that my parents were always cool with FH. For the first few years my dad teased him by calling him the wrong 'spanish' name everytime he saw him..
Like, 'Hey Julio, get us 2 beers' and 'Miguel, pass me the phone'~ but we all knew it was in good fun and now my dad loves to tell his buddies how cool my FH is cause he took my dad's crap AND gave it back to him...for example, FH liked to tell my dad, 'Get it yourself, Redneck.'

NY is such a diverse place, and I live in Queens, which is the most diverse county in the world, so I wonder if FH and I would have been so accepted if we lived in another state other than NY (let's say Idaho).

Re: Interracial Marriages

i agree. . .i am so happy for all of you that have such wonderful and supportive families

no one should ever have to go through what my sister went through for those years. . .

and what we all went through! I was only 13 years old and I had to hide the fact that i was helping her plan her wedding . . . we had to hide my dress and everything. . . and my parents were constantly trying to turn me against her and claiming that she was 'abandoning me'

it was a really sad situation and even though i dont know you girls - it makes me so happy to hear that you didnt have to go through any of that garbage!

I am Japanese, German, Irish, and English
FI is Hungarian, Romanian, and Russian.

He's Jewish, I'm Christian. He loves my family and I love his family, and our families get along. Obviously my family has so problem with it, since I'm such a mix anyway. His family has no problem with it either though. It's so great to know that it's not something either one of us has to worry about.

He gets that a lot too. I guess he's a man of many faces. I'm so looking forward to seeing what our next child will look like.

I don't understand why so many people still have a problem with interracial marriages. But as ant n tilde mentioned, I count my blessings everyday that both of our families look at the person within and not their ethnic background. Love comes in many different shapes, colors and sizes. We never know what 'package' it will come to us in so I believe we should be open minded before we miss a real chance at true love.

Re: Interracial Marriages

I didn't have it so easy early on. I'm Hispanic and FH is Trinidadian. My parents are very old-fashioned thinking, and were totally against the relationship, never having met him. I was only 18 at the time, and I hid the relationship for 4 1/2 years, until I couldn't take it any longer. All my friends and a bunch of family knew, it was only my parents who were the problem.

My mom came around quickly, but my dad didn't speak to me for 7 months. They both now accept the relationship and even threw us a surprise engagement party in June. They realized they were wrong, and I'm happy that I was able to stand up for what I believe in, even if it involved the risk of not having a relationship with them.

My DH is Dominican. His family doesnt speak English. There is an obvioius language barrier, and i dont think my dad was thriled 9 years ago when we first started dating. But now he is part of the family and welcomed and loved.
I on the other hand, feel like the outcast in his family and dont attend many functions.

Re: Interracial Marriages

We are, and mainly the only problem is his dad. His dad treats me nice enough, but hates the idea of his son marrying outside his race. But overall everyone gets along. We are very fortunated.
